I've got some crazy tank ideas.
1.) Make turrets and tanks not cross-faction compatible (Gallente turrets do not fit on Caldari tanks and vice versa) Honestly why would that be possible anyways?
2.) Allow turrets to have fire rate modules to make them fire differently. IE: Allow blaster turret to fire in a single-fire mode, like a giant plasma cannon, or allow a rail tank to fire close range automatic fire etc.
More variation, and better lore adherence.

Blaster becoming a plasma cannon is a huge nerf to AI and AV role,as shield boosters will then be useful and fotm, gunlogi is weird now and nerfing maddies means more gunlogis so wp farm for AV. DISCLAIMER: this is what i think playng dust as a maxed skilled tanker and maxed skilled forgegunner
The idea is to give players the option of how their turret fires. So a player will have have choice of making a plasma turret fire automatic, or in a PC-esque single shot.
Since this would be a choice, your domino effect conclusions are premature.
As for the lore responsive : I suppose if that's just how EVE works then that's all there is to it. Do all the tank manufacturers work together to ensure all tanks and components are cross-compatible? Or is it more a situation of "it just works don't question it".
Interesting either way.
Even without forcing tank frames to use their own turrets I would still like to see the ability to change fire modes on turrets

Because the "Automatic Rifle' Archetype is not suitable for a Tank and is in keeping with the fundamental design tenets of the weapons platform. All Large Turrets should be large calibre, high explosive, medium to long range weapons firing single or small numbers of rounds. What we have in Dust is a poor representation of armoured warfare.

All Large Turrets should be large calibre, high explosive, medium to long range weapons firing single or small numbers of rounds. What we have in Dust is a poor representation of armoured warfare. Automatic firing on a tank is fine, we just need more choice in the matter. Players should be able to choose how their plasma (or rail etc.) turret fires. Whether that be in automatic bursts, or single shot blasts. Definitely don't agree that 'all turrets should fire a certain way'. More customization is always better As an avid player of War Thunder and various other Tank simulators as well as a huge history buff on the development of the Tank as a war fighting vehicle I wholly disagree. HAV in Dust are fundamentally flawed and barely operate as tanks should. More turret options will not fix this issue, nor is the idea that tank main cannon should operate in a specific manner as limiting as people would believe.
You really don't want to go down the road of using real life comparisons to base things in Dust off of.
You'll eventually come to realize conventional modern ground warfare is an anachronism in a sci-fi universe. It's basically WW2 style combat but with lasers.
End of the day there is no reason to limit customization. Remember the Golden rule: gameplay>realism

Sure and right now our HAV game play is abominable. It's not fun, its not realistic, and it doesn't work. I suggest we have both relative realism and gameplay.
Well I think that's a bit dramatic, but ok.
On a side note, what exactly are you suggesting then? Or just complaining in general?

More variation, and better lore adherence. Everybody seems to forget that these characters in Dust we play as are mercs. That being said in the lore several squad ran with multiple set up min suits with amarr weapons, caldari tanks with blasters. If you read some of the descriptions on suits and weapons and even vehicles it has small descriptions of these teams
I fully get that we are independent mercs, but that has nothing to do with what I'm talking about.
What I'm talking about is how mix and matching tank parts between factions' tanks makes sense. How does the lore justify that?
Do the manufacturers coordinate to make sure components are compatible?
All I'm suggesting is that it might make more sense if tanks stuck to their own parts, but if we could alter how the turrets fire so that we are not losing customization
