Alright. This question can jump all over the place so bear with me. I generally like the unreal engine. My favourite fps for the ps3 ( and this is my personal opinion) is Unreal Tournament 3. The ability to download mods like maps/characters(go to ut3mod.com) and the ability to to use keyboard and mouse (for the ps3 console) makes it probably one of the most underrated games. Of course its definitely better on the pc.
The thing is, I'm quite surprised Dust514 is using this engine. I feel the engine here is not being utilised to its full potential. Yes I know its only a beta but its hard to see the link between this engine and what the engine is generally known for , great games that utilise this such as UT3, Gears of War etc. Is this engine just a basic one? Is Unreal generally the best engine available for ps3 for a game of this magnitude? Recently Epic Games released the Unreal Engine 4. I wonder if they would use that for the final build. |

i think no, the unreal engine have a very big latency to load the texture on ps3 and this isn't a good engine for manage huge player (32+ pg), the better thing is a engine made ad hoc for this play but this comport a high budget don't adapt for free-to-play games. |

I'm sorry, I was going to let this slide but really, I just can't, Trinciatore.
List of games that run on the Unreal Engine
That's, of course, wiki and so not a truly extensive list, nor is it 100% accurate, however with that as a given look at the titles and numbers of games on the list. The Unreal Engine has been and remains a fairly ubiquitous staple of the gaming industry. This is a fine engine for the purposes it is being put to here. Creating an engine from scratch takes far more time, effort and money than many people give thought to. Not just graphical fidelity is handled by the engine chosen, but also physics, lighting and pretty much everything. Custom engines are lovely, no doubt about it, and tailoring one to your exacting purposes may just be what the doctor ordered but the time, intensity, and work that goes into creating an engine, then creating the tools to manipulate that engine and make them easy to use so as not to overrun a budget for the various departments is a fairly staggering task. Far more cost effective to utilize an engine that has received as much development work and improvements through time and trials than to start from the beginning.
As for your question Gunn, this is the starting point for CCP. As I said, much work has been done with this engine to find the limitations before, but not by CCP. They are fairly clever bastards overall so I'm willing to give them time to see what they come up with. I think this is the proper engine for the job at hand being time tested and tried. UE4 has only just been released. While it does grab headlines to be "the first" at something it's not always the best move (ask Laika about that). I'm unsure of the amount of cross compatibility between UE3 and 4, and the latter's compatibility with the PS3 architecture. I'm sure that it will be investigated, but for the time being and for the near future, I'm fairly sure CCP will stick with the UE3 engine. |

It has been stated that this is using a heavily modified version of the Unreal Engine. Visually we are not currently seeing anything like what the final build will look like. We need to save our graphics complaining until we see the final release version. |

I have to agree, I've been playing FPS's since before the original Unreal and when it came out it was a huge leap in this arena and it has gotten better over time. I'd be more willing to bet it's that CCP has made a first cut and has not taken advantage of or used the engine to it's full potential. This is a Beta after all and they have a far way to go before it's a marketable product... But to that point, it's got a lot of lag and visual glitches right now. Could be the maps, there is more complexity then most people think. They could definitely improve the skins and the HUD also... It's hard to tell if the person in front of you is friend or foe. I played last night for the first time so it may just be that I haven't played long enough yet, but I've already got a list of things in my head that would keep me from buying this game if they don't improve the over all game interactions. |

I'm pretty surprised that CCP decided to go with unreal engine. This engine seems not working well on PS3. A lot of games using it have some degree of frame rate issue like mass effect 3. hope they can solve the problem eventually. |

Isnt this because the game is supposed to be using Enlighten by Geomerics? click
I mean Unreal Engine is known for its lightning (at least is that one of the main contra arguments i hear when talking about Unreal Engine) so changing that aspect should change the overall feel completely. . .
Other than that the obvious texture loading is very unreal like. . . If you ever played UT 3 on a PC that barely fit the minimum requirements it gets pretty obvious |

Well like alot of eve online trailers that one was probably done on thier monster cinimatic computer, the one with icore 7 2 cpu sockets and 8x sli slots and 8x memory ddr3 slots. They have a special client for eve where they have it at a reduiculous setting then squish it down to resolutions we use and aa methods. Its likely they used the inhouse dust engine to pull that one off. |

currently you're looking at a toned down version of the UE3 engine. if you watch any of the CCP dust videos, you'll see how bright and shiny and sexy it is and which further concretes the fact that almost any game using the UE3 engine is automatically awesome. DNF, asuras wrath, homefront, mass effect (all), and some other games are the acception. there are a few games i refuse to list because i fear if a player were to gaze on the name they might scratch their eyes out. dont want to be held liable ykno. |

Good thing you dont have to buy it then. Dust514 is FREEEEEE! :)
But yeah there's still lots of work to be done. |

Arkham City uses Unreal Engine 3. It's a very powerful engine, and if they tweak it and use it to max potential they can achieve a lot. |
