So I've been saving forever, combined with battle rewards and components out of boxes I finally hit the 51,700ish components you needed to upgrade it to elvel 5. Now I get a massive 600 a day, compared to the 500 ;) It will be worth it in about 510 days.
Funny thing is I looked and the next level is still only 100 higher. Level 6 does exist for at least some current systems. The cost is insane though. I have a little over a 52 day wait till I can upgrade, or you have to pay 280k WBC to skip the wait. I can only imagine how much level 6 will cost. I don't think in any shape way or form will it be worth it as things stand now. If it follows the pattern of being about double, it will be something like 104k WBC for a lousy 100 wp increase.
Even if you drop money into it.. it's what 3 arum to 1 WBC, that would be 312k Arum. Even at the best exchange rate it would be a heck of a lot of money. I understand the warbarge was supposed to be a cash cow for CCP, but shouldn't it be a little more reasonable in how much you pay? It's like paying a thousand dollars in World of Warcraft for +1 hp or something weak.

Without money, battle rewards from playing pub matches or WBC box rewards your looking at about 100+ days of logging in for the 500 production to get to level 5. Level 6 I don't know yet because of the wait timer but it would be 5 times that number to pay to skip the wait. So after a little over a month wait your looking at probably another 171 days of earning 600 WBC to get level 6. From there you can only expect a longer delay on the timer, something like 300k WBC to skip past it would be my guess.
As you can imagine it would take at least a year or two to get to level 8 if you don't pay to skip the wait timer. Never mind earning the WBC to actually upgrade your stuff. When ever they finally released levels 6-8 I expected some new way to earn WBC to be implemented. A new Mobile factor as one of the modules, or better battle rewards. As it stands you could blow thousands of real world dollars just upgrading one thing, let alone trying to increase your entire war barge.

Personally i think anything that gives extra dmg outside of damage mods should be removed. No wonder i keep ask how people kill me so fast. What a joke. You would have it too... It doesn't really take that long to upgrade... a
To level 3 or 4, no it doesn't take any time at all. They are only about 10,000 and 25,000 to upgrade. Even if you do both your Mobile factory and your dmg boost to level 4 that's only about 50k each, so 3-6 months of work. You can lower that time by at least half if you play pub matches (WBC rewards are pretty randomly rare. You can go several battles in row getting them or days with nothing.) and do your best to get keys to open your boxes since they can give 1500+ WBC pretty commonly. I'd say in my experience at least 1 in 50 boxes gives WBC.
If your just starting out I'd also highly recommend you spend your daily bonus Arrum on WBC. It's a horrible exchange rate, 70 AR is only about 23 WBC, but getting your mobile factory up those first few levels fast as possible is highly important.
As for being completely OP and the reason you always loose... nah. It takes almost nothing to get to 3% dmg, and the extra 2% most people might have is pretty small boost. Honestly the bigger OP side of a good war barge is the experimental labs. You get better than proto level equipment for free on a daily basis. Depending on your WBC income and your Lab level you can get 3, 6 or even 10 of those items a day. Even if you don't use them they sell for a pretty penny to other players for the most part.
