Alright, this might seem a little unnecessary, but hear me out.
So on a forum earlier today, I read the mention of a firgurative drop pod, this brought into my mind how cool actual drop pods would be.
So my idea of the drop pod is this...
For the drop pod to work you must do 3 things. 1. Have a ceratin skill up to a certain level. 2. Buy the drop pod. 3. Get an EVE online buddy to put your drop pods in his ship for you to quick spawn.
Now, with the drop pod you get the opportunity to drop wherever you want on the map, without waiting for the clone countdown timer. And because the clone you have just spawned did not come from the current reserves on the planet- when you use the drop pod your team's clone reserve count does not drop when you spawn.

Entirely subjective comment: Pods are unnecessary. The suits are intended to survive atmospheric entry (source, Fanfest cinematic with some extrapolation. Perhaps not.) Better to drop suits as are.
However this is a touch too unbalancing. Why would anyone bother with a CRU or drop uplink if you can pay to spawn literally on top of an objective. How does a defending force guard against that? An overwhelming force can march on a particular point, certainly but there are risks involved with this. Dropping in out of nowhere with no preparation means no risk and nearly no defense.
Granted there will be orbital cannons to attack space craft however, I do not believe that would be a deterrent. Not nearly enough of one at the very least. Remember, there are quite a few Eve players who've done the math on suicide ganking to make it profitable. The same can and will be done were an idea like this implemented.
I'm not trying to rain on your parade but I just do not see this as feasible. Good idea just not really workable when considering both sides of the equation. |

I could see this being used in some missions. Although the countdown timer is not actual a "countdown" timer for respawn. My assumption was that the timer was your consciousness being downloaded into the clone brain. That is backed by the fact that the 10 seconds doesn't start until you choose a clone bay. Having your clone off-site would not make that process any quicker.
Drop pods would be a great addition in some types of gameplay, I think. But not all. Generic slayer style gameplay doesn't really have an application for it in my opinion. |

I understand completely, I did not take into account how unbalanced it would make the game. Thank you for your insight. |

Aerial spawns should already be making their way into the game later in the beta :) |

A simple way to balance this would be to follow through on making it something an EVE player has to fit for. Make it so that it requires a specific setup and set of skills to use. And then make it so that the drop pods take up a LOT of space. So a Titan might be able to fit enough for maybe 40 of them, with everything else scaling down. This would put in in line with the idea of orbital bombardments, something to help sway the balance of a match but not enough to determine it outright.
And keep in mind, any slots used to make a ship drop troops are slot NOT used to make it fight in space. |

Logistics dropships can do this now. You spawn onto them, and they stay high up enough to keep from getting shot, jump out the side and after a few seconds you'll see "hold x to enable some inertia dampener or other scifi gizmo" and you hold that to do the neat dropping from the sky and landing in a cool crouch position thing from the video. |

That would help with balance.
And let's say that there is a maximum amount of drop pods allowed to be into the battleground.
But, the more I think of it... drop suits are meant for the deploying. And dropships can deploy clones as shown by the immortal clone trailer, so maybe there will be other ways to aerial deploy. |

Well, something else I did not know , I apologize for starting this topic without any knowledge of areial spawns. |

Being someone who uses a logistics dropship, how in the world do you survive if you're that high up? Every time I stop hugging the ground someone pulls out a swarm launcher, or a railgun, or a blaster, or a rocket launcher....
I fly low, though I could use some more go. |

No details disclosed atm. They are working on alternate spawn methods, including aerial spawns! Other than that, their lips have been tight. :( |

It looks like the guy wants the "soldier-torpedo" the Coercer dropped in the cinematic DUST 2012 trailer. I see this being used to set up a beach-head before the warbarge is fully prepped. Remember, no matter the guidance, the troops are simply dropping from orbit in formation! Drop on a random-ish location near standard attacker spawn, but drop the soldiers themselves close together. The objective of such a drop would be to secure spawnpoints for the main warbarge force, allowing a more advantageous start for attackers. Clearly, only your most elite would be allowed on such important missions! Lastly, the mere sight of a squad breaching the atmosphere in a sonic boom, coming down in a blue fireball, and fighting almost instantly upon landing, is one of the most epic things i could think of in gaming! Aside from fighting off a world-shattering demon upon the highest mountain, but that's another game entirely! |
