DISCLAIMER: This Is not a thread relating to the balance of the Scrambler Rifle, rather it is an investigation into the mechanics of how the Scrambler Rifle works
Previously on the Dust 514 Forums
In continuation of the investigation into Scrambler Rifles, Deezy Dabest and I hopped onto DUST to test micro-charge damage scaling, and the overall charge multiplier on the Scrambler Rifle. The Procedure was the Same as when testing with Aeon, a flux grenade to get rid of the shields, followed up by firing a shot at various charge levels at the target. This time we allowed for the Armor to be fully repaired between every shot. After we finished gathering initial data, we confirmed there was no discrepancy with the Multipliers when using different tiers of Scrambler Rifles.
Link To Raw Data (and graph)
Conclusions Drawn (Tl;Dr): Scrambler Rifle's Fully Charged Multiplier is approximately 4x multiplier
Damage Scales Linearly towards the 4x(300% increase) (at a rate of approximately 1.57% every 10 ms)
Further Testing To Do: Heat buildup of Fully Charged Shots (WTB Numerical Heat Indicator)
Heat Scaling of Charged Shots (Rattati Plz)
Is it even possible to fire a base shot out of a Scrambler Rifle

Well, 4x might seem like a whole lot. But I've noticed that the heat build up was increased ever so slightly only a person who's used it forever would notice. Rattati admitted that he recently Ninja Nerfed it, but did he really change it back ?
Notice forum Warriors. If this charge x4 is reduced to x2 you would ultimately have to give this weapon a base damage buff. Careful what you wish for.

I take it the heat build up for charged shots is linear as well.
I do appreciate having exact information about things, For example I do not the correct strategy if my team is nearly out of clones I get killed but the Red MMC is on its last armor point. I assume that it is not to press anything so I spend time bleeding out and if things seems clear ask for a revive. |

Hmm interesting, I have been waiting for someone to find the detailed damage of the charge on the the scrambler! I knew the charge was hella powerful but I didn't know it was a x4! Good job guys this deserves a +1!

It has been changed back...I could gather yet another spreadsheet on the problem, and it wasn't the actual heat statistic that had been changed at that time, it was the Rate of Fire statistic (which seemed to prove that heat buildup is per shot, rather than per second...albeit in a roundabout way)

I say in a roundabout way since the stat in the weapon profile is Heat per Second. So let's look at the Scrambler Rifle:
Heat per Second: 50 Rate of Fire: 600
Rate of Fire, convert to Shots/s...so 10 Rounds per Second Divide Heat per Second by Rounds per second to get Heat/Round
In the case of the ScR, 5 heat per round base.

I can tell you pretty definitively that no one using a standard controller is reaching the full 600 RoF. To accomplish this you would have to be moving significantly faster than the blink of an eye while also maintaining perfect time to within a 10ms tolerance.
Something to also consider is that the sustained RoF over more than a couple of seconds on the ScR is significantly lower than any other weapon. With the breach or any other weapon your only interruption is having to reload while with the ScR even with the Amarr assault on you are limited to roughly half a clip if you spam it at full speed. This means that even for a very well practiced player with quite a bit of SP invested the sustained RoF is less than half of any other semi automatic weapon with a RoF of 600.
The linear scaling is something that has been fairly obvious to most ScR users but it is nice to finally see it on paper. I had a good time discussing these things with Thaddeus while we carried out these tests and will gladly participate in other tests.
Some notes from the results of this test:
The charge and spam tactic is significantly affected by micro charge times. With no data on average trigger speeds it is hard to really judge how the player base as a whole is affected. I do not view this as broken or in needing of adjustment since the weapon has been balanced around this since it was added to the game.
As far as the multiplier goes I really wish we knew when it was raised to 400% damage total. I will admit that with proficiency, the profile, warbarges, and the changes to damage mods it comes off as being a bit OP against shields on paper. This meta restriction artificially imposed on players is bad for the game and specially bad for new players who have no idea and end up rage quitting because they are not taking appropriate actions.
Something is going to have to give in that regard. Either shields are going to need modules added which allow them to give up HP for laser resistance or the damage profile of the ScR is going to need to be adjusted. Personally I feel that bringing lasers down to +15/-15 would be the best start. I feel like the 2 damage profile was originally implemented because "reasons" by the old CCP team which was more focused on creating an Eve style game of rock, paper, scissors as oppose to actually balancing things.

I don't necessarily think that the Damage Profile is the issue, I strongly feel that it is the system of shields/shield modules as a whole that creates issues...and moving the damage profile of lasers isn't going to change the situation much.
@Devs/GMs Any chance you can tell us how much heat is generated by a fully charged shot? Also, a data gathering drive would be nice to determine the average RoF on Semi-automatic weaponry.

The damage profile only becomes an issue when attempting to balance shields as a whole. The fine line between keeping the scrambler highly effective against shields while not being completely OP and making sure that shields are not OP against other weapons is not one I would like to be hunting for personally. I am not totally sure it is possible.
A shield module which has far less HP but also has specific resistances would be great but I think there is too much computing going on already for the simple process of a shot hitting someone so I think we should try to avoid making that even more complicated. We already have to send a shot across the country to the server so it can send it back across the country to damage someone so adding 100s of milliseconds of computing time in the middle just to figure out the damage based on a players fit versus the weapon hitting it sounds like a bad idea to me.

Great work OP and thank you for your efforts .
Somebody has to do this and your the better man for that , it seems that's the only way that things get done around here is if the community does the work . ( Again , part of the example )

"Somewhat sad" does not even begin to cover it. CCP is so horribly vague it is not even funny. Most players here do not even know how the payouts work little less how most of the other functions in the game work.
Any player that does not know the forums exist because every single in game explanation SUCKS. Bandwidth does not even have a definition anywhere. How can we expect to have a NPE when new players have literally no chance of understanding what is going on in the game if they do not come to the forums or get lucky enough to fall into a squad with a helpful vet.

while I agree that CCP needs to advertise the forums a bit more in-game...not everything needs to be absolute public knowledge. The Scrambler Rifle specifically needed to be investigated because of a lot of conflicting information being given by players, and a lot of misinformation that has taken hold (some of which I myself helped perpetuate), so I felt an effort was needed to properly explain the mechanics to counteract the damage that had already been done. It is also important to ensure that there where no accidental changes caused by who knows what in the database (as we saw with the officer suit layouts, some changes can have unintended side-effects).

Adding an info line that says 4x to the scrambler rifle info in game.
Adding a pop up or even a load screen detailing bandwidth.
Adding a pop up or even load screen detailing the vehicle entry timers so that blues will stop chasing down my vehicle thinking they are going to get in even tho I have no intention of sitting there for 15 seconds. I almost feel sorry for these guys as they have just fallen under the impression that no one ever wants them in their vehicle.
Just the simplest things that CCP could add a description of in game to assist new players in actually making it more than a couple of days.
No, I do not think they should point players to the forums more as they will just lead them to join the rumor mongering, trolling, and generally leave them with the bad feeling of Dust that most people get after seeing all the bitching on the forums. Besides that some players do no have any type of browser access besides their PS3. Does that mean they should quit the game to come search the forums every time they do not understand some thing?

Fair enough...some more stats being displayed on the items would be very useful such as: Optimal Range Effective Range Damage Type (The Bonuses) Available Bandwidth on Dropsuits Bandwidth cost on Deployables Charge Shot Damage/Multiplier (where applicable) Remove Heat/s statistic, add Heat/shot statistic...(unless CCP just likes trolling us by leaving it in)
As for the forums...I do think that letting players know that the forums exist and/or making it more obvious that the forums exist in-client is a good thing.
As for the loading screen text...maybe we should have a thread to gather from the forum community what useful information/tips/hints should be on the loading screens?

I VERY highly agree on the ranges. I feel like it is very odd that those numbers are so hidden.
Damage types on fitting is actually a very good idea which I had not thought about.
Bandwidth cost is shown but there is nothing explaining what bandwidth is.
I still feel that forums should be the last resort of players. Generally speaking it is kind of a cesspool.
IF I remember correctly Ratatti had a load screen thread exactly like what we are talking about here but it got thrown over to the archives with nothing ever done.
