I keep saying I'm going to wait for something or other before I post this idea, and I realize this thread may end up going nowhere, but I've been thinking about this for months and wanted to try and get it out there.
I made a thread last week about what mechanics people would be willing to tear up and redo in Dust. I may make a thread about one of the big things I wanted to do with that at some later point, but for right now I want to again try and look forward to the future of "Dust x86" as it's now being commonly called.
The idea here is that Dust has 3 types of assets: Dropsuits, Ground Vehicles, and Air Vehicles. Each of these plays differently and requires a different skillset.
Keeping to the current mechanic of Level 3 in the Frame/Vehicle skill unlocking Specializations, you would further unlock new Tech-3 assets via getting Level 5 in those same skills.
These new assets would be modular in the same style as Tech-3 in EVE, allowing a minimum of 5 choices of subsystem in each of 5 categories, in order to not only allow the player to build an asset with exactly the stats and bonuses they want, but to visually modify them at the same time. The subsystems would have their own skills that need to be trained for each category, but they would all be 1x skills.
Dropsuits: The subsystems for these would allow them to combine roles of Specialist suits to a limited extent. The overall performance in each category would be inferior to a Specialist suit, but the combination would allow the player more flexibility.
These subsystems would also allow players to cross weight classes. Remember that DevBlog that mentioned Scouts with Heavy weapons? If you're willing to sacrifice other fitting slots, that would be possible, as well as Heavy suits with a Heavy, a Light, and a Sidearm.
Ground Vehicles: MTACs. I've talked about them before, but I wrote up a detailed proposal this time.
Add to that the possibility of trading pilot-controlled weapon systems for smaller ones controlled by another player so that players who prefer a team approach can do that if they want.
Air Vehicles: Bring back the original 2006 concepts for Fighters as a multi-mode aircraft for dedicated pilots. These would allow the pilot to fly similar to the VTOL aircraft we have now, but also to press a button and switched to a fixed-wing mode that let's it fly like a jet. In both modes performance will be inferior to a specialized VTOL or fixed-wing, but again the point is flexibility.
Similar to MTACs, the player can sacrifice his own weaponry to mount a dedicated turret for a friend.

THIS IS THE CRAZY PART: Skillpoint Bleed.
Part of what balances the performance of Tech-3 spacecraft in EVE is that when you die in one you lose 1 level off of one of the subsystem skills, which is part of why the training multiplier is so low.
Obviously that could never work in Dust with how frequently our assets die.
HOWEVER, the idea here is that each death with the asset could remove SP from your Unallocated pool. This would be very minimal, but would still have an impact.
By minimal I'm thinking 1 SP for a Dropsuit death and 10 SP for a vehicle death since those are far harder to kill.
At the cost of SP loss and a hefty ISK investment, the player attains an asset that let's them combine roles as they please and redefine the way they play the game.
That's the crazy idea that's been bouncing around in my head for the past few months. Thoughts, suggestions, or detailed descriptions of how moronic I am are welcome.

Cat Merc wrote:So, with every death I ever had in DUST, in 3 years of playing, I would lose about 6000 SP in a Tech III suit.
So about the cost of the first level of a skill.
I don't think you thought that through lol The amount isn't set in stone. I figured with suggesting something that needs that the numbers should be small so as not to illicit a panic response.

I don't think you thought that through lol I increased the numbers. Is that still too negligible?

73 views and not one response.
That's some kind of record.

True Adamance wrote:You know I love your MTAC design however I'm less interest in a biped walker as much as I am a quadruped golden Jackal/Hyena resembling a Slaver Hound. Come to think of it, that would actually be a kind of neat idea for a subsystem.
Rather than just having differently shaped legs for the Propulsion subsystem, you could maybe have a variety of propulsion types like quad-legs or treads.

Oh god the possibilities for erotic fan-fictions have just skyrocketed..... I mean a zany Amarrian TV series with giant robot fusion and spandex wearing heroes. Off-topic has never been so good.
Well, seems like at least one person liked my OP.

Toobar Zoobar wrote:What would you think of pirate class suits and vehicles, such as mordu's legion. They would, like in EVE, require gallente and caldari skills to operate. I think that would be more interesting at this point and given the lore if dust I think it would be suiting.
Plus looking at vehicles right now, we only have gal and cal so it would fit right in. I would rather that over amarr and minmater vehicles to be honest. This thread is aimed specifically at looking further ahead. Personally, I would consider Pirate faction assets a necessity considering that Pirate NPCs for transporting clone soldiers already exist in EVE, providing clear evidence for the development of related tech by them.
Obviously they should also have unique geometry to match the design aesthetic of their EVE counterparts where applicable.
