Hello everyone. ShadowClawZERO here and I am an aspiring sniper. I want to start off by introducing myself and saying that I look forward to playing with you all.
I'm new to the whole FPS thing and I am taking all advice from all experienced playstyles ESPECIALLY snipers. I am also interested in joining a team. Please and thank you all very much. |

Never stay in the same location for too long. If you kill people, and they're salty like me, they WILL hunt you down.
Nanohives are your best friends if you're just starting out, just keep them behind cover, as to not expose your location.
Try getting out of militia snipers as soon as possible, they have horrid ammo, both in clip and supply.
Sidearms, like the SMG, will help out in close quarters combat, as quickscoping is not a thing here.

You'll probably want a caldari suit for sniping. Gallente is for punching people in the mouth on the frontline. Also, Dust University is a good Corp to learn from. Welcome to THE fps. This is the deep end of the pool. Use your forum search to learn as much about sniping as possible. Also, youtube vids can give you a good feel for video game sniping. Headshots are your best bet for one hit kills in this game, but lots of guys here know how to not get shot

The Tactical Sniper is the way to go newbro. Until you get some proficiency. Staking some damage mods early on will help increase the punch of your rifle. Move throughout the map. Nanohives are a must. Put a dampener on. The last thing you need is for a scout to find you with a simple scan.

While fittings and skills are important what keeps a sniper alive is positioning: always mind where you place yourself and from where you can get shot.
With time you're going to learn where all the "popular" sniping spots are, AVOID THOSE because everybody and their mother knows where they are and you can be sure that every player that gets pissed at snipers will check those first.
You should generally avoid rooftops and hilltops, while the height advantage is useful you have a clear silouette against the background, this will get you shot most of the time. Your presence on rooftops and such should be as limited as possible, if you need to clear some enemies and a rooftop is the best vantage point you should go up, kill and then run away as fast as you can.
As people already told you stay mobile, if you are killing people and you never move from your spot they will hunt you down and you're going to get shot.
You should always aim for the head, it's quite the obvious advice but with the headshot multiplier you can get one-shot kills consistently-ish (it's a word right?) even with a militia sniper. You should never hesitate when taking a shot, targets that are standing still are your priority because an easy headshot is usually an easy kill but if you see friendlies engaging some redberries tag as much of them as possible, you may not get the kill but you are at least being useful.
Get a michrophone and a squad, a sniper can be useful in more than one way, you can direct people around and call targets, providing intel via voice comms while not getting you any WP is one of your main tasks.
About suits and fittings there's not much to say, you can use whatever you want, I've seen people snipe in every kind of suit, from scouts to sentinels. My personal choice is the Minmatar Assault for its bonus on SMG ammo capacity. If you are dead set on being a sniper you should consider the Caldari Commando, at level 5 you get a 25% faster reload speed and extra 10% damage to all rail weaponry (that means Sniper Rifle, Rail Rifle and Bolt Pistol). I suggest to not use a Logi suit for sniping besides the Amarr, the lack of a sidearm will kill you.
For modules you want Light Damage Mods in the highslots (you should never use more than 3 because of diminishing returns). Low slots are your choice. Many people stack as much plates as possible, extra armor HP will help you survive consecutive bodyshots from other snipers, CQC encounters, or even an headshot from an unskilled sniper (unlikely and depends on what kind of suit you're using). Dampeners are also nice, you really don't wanna pop-up on enemy radars while you are sniping.
Sniper Rifles come in 4 flavors: Vanilla, Tactical, Charge and Thales. Vanilla: high damage, low fire rate, long range at 450m effective. Tactical: high magazine size, high fire rate, "low" damage, short range (350m). Charge: very-high damage, very low charge-up fire rate, medium range (400m). Thale: hits as hard as the Charge, shoots as fast and as far as the Classic, use one and people will hunt you with militia snipers to make you lose your precious officer weapon.
You should level up the Sniper Rifle operation skill as soon as possible, the time the sway takes to stop is REALLY ANNOYING. Always bring compact hives when you need ammo, always pop them when you're full. Nanohives kill more snipers than you would think.

As someone who started the game as a sniper, I can tell you this game is NOT sniper friendly.
The game itself has always made it difficult for snipers to be effective enough to be relevant, particularly on a skirmish map, but over the last year or more, the role has continuously been watered down to the point where it is virtually non existent as a role.
Kodho, someone who has been a sniper his entire Dust career, is even looking for ways to branch out.
That all being said, I would consider having a secondary role alongside sniper. Perhaps even using a weapon like a Scrambler Rifle as a quasi sniper rifle. This way when the sniping mechanics of Dust get annoying, you can switch to something else.

If you're 100% sure that you want to play as a sniper the fit to go for you is the Caldari Commando, as for rifles.. I'd recommed the either the vanilla or the tactical one, as with any other "build" you should invest in core skills first As someone said before if you're a new player consider joining either Dust University or Immortal Guides, I can recomend botj from personal experience
If one day you'll be at least half as good as this guy you can consider you a good sniper

Get Sniper Rifle Op to 5 asap, that sway is what annoyed me in the beginning when I started out. Of course I would suggest getting Rail Rifle unlocked too. That way if you get bored/frustrated being a sniper you can switch to a support or front line role easier, and if you do play a Caldari Commando, and need to engage at a closer range you'll have a solid weapon with nice bonuses to fall back on.
Also, so you can equip higher level sniper rifles and rail while having room for other gear like shields/armour (if you're going commando) make sure you're gaining levels in your "Dropsuit Electronics (+5% CPU/level)", "Dropsuit Engineering (+5% PG/level)", "Light Weapons (-3% CPU cost/level)", "Nanocircuitry (for the hives)" and if you're using damage mods; "Handheld Weapon Upgrades (-3% CPU cost/level and unlocks higher grade mods at 3 and 5). Those other skills will also let you equip things like CPU and PG upgrades so you can squeeze that little extra from the suit to equip that more powerful gear if you're a touch short.
Oh and you'll probably need (for example) Sniper Rifle Op 5 -> Sniper Rifle Prof 3(maybe 4? and gives +3% dmg vs armor/level) -> Sniper Rifle Fitting Op (Lowers PG Cost 5%/level) -- I don't have the bonuses memorized, and currently don't have access to my ps3 to log in and check, I'll try to update later unless I get corrected. -- |

Seriously though, Dust is a strange game. You'll notice that it's rough around the edges, some things never make sense, the devs seem oblivious to a couple of problems and everyone gives you slightly different advice. This is because the game is all about mojo, magic, or something deep inside the machine. What you'll want to pay attention to above all else is the feel of the weapon you're using, as you practice, take shots that you don't dream of making, sweep your reticle fast and try to get a feel for the timing, and use the same type of weapon for long periods of time. As you develop a feel for the game, and a sense of style, you're abilities will improve faster than the numbers of your fits.
Also, keep moving. If you've sniped three people, and then you snipe me, I'm coming for you, requesting bearing and distance of the sniper over chat, and using a suit that takes 20M SP to fit... once you feel the first sniper round whizz past, you're not just suppressing infantry, you're in a battle with another sniper that knows where you are, and you still don't know where he is.

Now, I'm pretty sure everyone else that has posted on this forum page has told you some really good ideas BUT, I want to share mine as well so, to make sure I make this quick, I'm going to tell you 5 of the most important things you need to know when it comes to sniping, since I'm a never good sniper myself (almost pro, but not there yet)
1. heavy commando dropsuit, this is seriously the best dropsuit you can use when a beginner, you can withstand counter-snipers, because as soon as someone finds out your using a sniper, they WILL hunt you down, my favorite commando is the caldari commando, the 'downwind' sniper, 'woundriot' combat rifle some damage modifiers, and Nano Hives, so I can withstand another sniper, I have extra ammo, and when I'm moving to another sniping position, I can defend myself, pretty well against most foes
2. area, for the best sniping experience, you have to be in a good spot, I have a loop of three areas I go to, one after the other every time I'm found, 1) behind your zone, this is #1 because most people tend to over-look this area, its also snotgunner, knifer, etc. proof (which can be a pain in the behind) AND its a good place to be a counter-sniper. 2) behind enemy lines, you can seriously get a jack load of kills by picking off people who are weak and retreating, however you are a easier target for the shotgunners, knifers, 3) on the sides of the map, this area you won't get a lot of kills, but you will weaken a lot of enemy forces, making them fall back, this will also give you a lot of kill assists, which will improve your isk(money) and sp(skill points), then by the time I'm spotted or I've died at the third spot, everyone would have forgotten about the 1st spot and I do this as a endless loop
3. RUN, as soon as you are scanned or your taking damage, RUN because if its a counter-sniper, shotguner, knifer, you know the sniper pests, and you stay there you WILL and I mean WILL DIE, I do this and at the most I've ever died using a sniper was 4 times, and that's the MOST I've died
4. war savage, you know the stuff you get at the end of every battle? yea that stuff, that's the 'woundriot' combat rifle, 'downwind' sniper, its really good stuff and guess what? you would have to pay to get it, but nope. Its FREE-E-e-e!
5. Militia gear. That, that, that ERRRR its so useless, do NOT be a sniper with militia gear, it will want to make you want to quit being a sniper. someone can easily escape if they aren't in wide open spaces.
sniping is a important job, it weakens the heavies, kills the lights, they help your team a lot, but they also are a disciple job, you will be hated by some but don't let that bring you down as its a important job if you want your team to win.
