Tanks are pretty strong, well at least one type of tank fitted a certain way can take a lot of punishment. If a tank driver is pretty accurate they can kill most AV before they get more than a shot or two off. That makes them seem strong. I've seen people swing the large rail turret around and gun down multiple people on the rapid fire setting. I'm guessing they use a mouse and keyboard but meh.
The other key component to a great tank is being willing to run away, not only when your in danger but just from time to time. Your going to **** people off as you kill them. They change to AV fits and rush where you are/were. If your not there any more there is a fairly good chance their going to die to infantry in their AV suits and just get more mad. Suddenly your role as a tank hit critical mass. You don't even have to kill any one any more to let your team win the match.
By just staying alive your making a significant part of the other team chase you around, toss OB's etc just to try and kill you. I've been on both sides of the fence and it's very easy to make a match turn into nothing but 'kill that tank'. Having competent people in your secondary gunnery seats helps too. Some times they can get more kills than the driver just because they don't have to worry about anything but killing people and it greatly helps the tank alive with two other people picking off AV.
In the end I would not say tanks are completely OP, just unbalanced. Imo you should need to have the 2 gunner seats filled to do well as a tank. That way requiring 2-3 people running an AV fit to destroy a proto tank would be fair. As it stands a good proto tank is a huge boon to the team it's on. It either kills a bunch of people or pulls out two to three times the players on the enemy side to have a good chance of taking it out. Sure it cost more isk up front but most good AV suits are not cheap and your more than likely going to die either to the tank or the infantry around it several times in the attempt to kill it.
The other problem with tanks is their pretty worthless till you hit top level in your skills. Militia, basic and advanced tanks are just asking to get killed, especially if you don't have the skills to back them up. It basically makes tanks an all or nothing type of skill. Sure I've seen people with maxed out vehicle skills destroy a map with some basic or advanced tanks, but not people building the skill up. No were else in dust is the gap between basic and proto level so huge imo.

Eh a commando suit might give you a small chance against infantry, if you survive long enough to switch weapons. But AV suits are generally glass cannons, it's like rushing up with a sniper fit. You have to do as much dmg as possible with your high slots and be fast enough to try and keep up with a tank over rough terrain. Generally you understand that no amount of armor will help you against a tank, they take down sentinels just as fast as any other drop suit really.
While a back up weapon does help, it doesn't help a ton. Plus you have to pay for that extra light weapon, and they are not cheap. On average you can expect 40k + for a proto weapon, at least 8k for advanced. This can bump your AV fit to 100k easily, for something that more than likely will die trying to kill a tank, or die right afterwards to infantry.
Yet people complain their 200k tanks die after they slaughter 20 or 30 people and few AV's get together and take them out?
