I am a long time Eve Online player with broken service the last few years, have 2 characters over 60mill sp so I join this game having some understanding of player and equipment upgrades using the skill points.
I have spent 9 days playing this fps game, I have paid and used three active and passive slot sp bonus using the 7 day boosts. I would estimate 80-100 games played so far.
Overall this is just my opinion and suggestions:
Game play feels clunky and why do avatars get caught on many edges in this game as well as being unable to move over the small terracing in the game without using a jump? It feels unnatural. Pretty simplistic graphic engine which still raises more questions as to how so many games, at least 30percent I have played were heavily lagged and low fps for most the game. Not my connection I assure you. Also using the equipment thru the R2 button feels wrong, sharing two button features switch weapons and use equipment(holding R2) only adds to the games clunky feel. overall pretty simple graphics but hey its a free fps on ps3, however hard to compete with other fps games when they are much more immersive.
The one issue that really annoys me is the Battle matchmaking. For starters I find almost half my game play does this, select instant battle, go to searching, then waiting to deploy, and more often than naught it will kick me to the battle matchmaking screen after about 5 min. The matchmaking overall takes 5 min to deploy, returning my game play to the battle matchmaking beginning after waiting to deploy over 5 min is annoying. Battle matchmaking (Scotty) at least half the time I find myself in a match with several high sp players who tend to control the match, faction matchmaking I always find much higher sp players vs lower ones controlling the games. I know im low sp with only 2.8mill skillpoints after 9 days of game play. I understand perhaps there are not enough new players in this game to have a balanced match, but overall I dont feel new players will endure hundreds of more matches to grind out the 5mill sp one needs to be able to just play in these mismatched games. If you desire to hold new players in an underwhelming graphic game like this I suggest find some way to make a balance game play or new rookies will not remain in your game. I understand the game has been out over 2 years now, but there still needs to be entertainment value for anyone continuing to play. I do not know what variance they select for lower sp games but being one shoted upon initial spawn by one avatar enemy seems imbalanced. Scotty sucks for newer players.
I would suggest giving newer players some incentive to play, increase their SP to 3-5 million when they begin. Every game that has been out for several years needs to have some incentive for newer recruits to feel like they can play with the veterans.
Community question, why do half the matches I play in have 4-7 players leave the game at the beginning or when it looks like they may be losing? And how come so many dont play the objectives over going afk on the perimeter of the map? I would not say all my matches had this action but about 30 percent do. Is there some type of missing incentive for players to remain and finish the match? I do think sp gain is low, and maybe making a base sp bonus for playing a full match would be in order, just seems odd that so many matches go with mismatched number of players on each side.
I know many of you may believe giving out higher skill points for incentive is unfair to the overall veterans and the time they have spent in the grind for skill points, but overall your talking about adding new players and they want the same thing as you do, Entertainment. Currently I have had multiple friends who play other fps with me notice me spending the last 9 days playing Dust, they all asked my opinion of the game play of dust. I said to them what I am saying here, I am not trashing the game I personally loved playing Eve Online for years but I cant suggest this game to friends until I would see the entertainment value of this game.
Ill continue to play this and see what higher sp does for my rookie game play. One thing about eve with its pve and pvp side of the game, no player felt that he could not be entertained playing that game, lower sp or higher sp players. Granted It took Eve Online many years before it improved it made many changes and many upgrades before it was seen as a great game.
If I am overlooking any mechanics in Dust concerning these issues please correct me, I am new to the Dust game play and I am only providing some feed back. I could not find any current feed back when I began to play Dust and I hope this is information new recruits can use. |

Basically everything you've said we've brought up on a number of occasions, nice to see a new player pointing it out though. also just nice to see a new player lol.
also also those terrain glitches have been there for a very long time, think closed beta long. We've just had to learn where they are and avoid them.

I fell through the map today, that sucked. Other than that, I had 22 Million Sp just for having my inactive sp ticking away for me while I wasn't playing Dust ( I stopped not long after Beta). I was frustrated then because I sucked so bad at everything. Now I wish I would have stuck it out. I needed three things really: brushing up on my controls, improving my gaming skills, and finally getting enough skill points to Max most skills in dropsuit upgrades and at least one weapon. I still can't fit a proto suit, but that is because I am learning how to play again and my real life skills are rusty. Proto suits would just waste ISK right now. Just look for everything in dropsuit upgrades that increases your CPU or your power grid and get those to level 5. Also, from the NeoCom (start button) go to options and change your control scheme if you are unhappy with the button layout. I know I had to change my button layout. Also change your sensitivity to max level ( you are going to suck again for a few days after doing this because you learned on a lower sensitivity). I really can't stress how important the dropsuit upgrades skills are. Even level 2 systems hacking which I just got, has saved my life multiple times in the last 24 hours. I can probably provide some clarity on many of the points you bring up.
The low graphic quality is due to the size of the maps and the number of players on the field. I donGÇÖt think there are currently any other Consul FPS games that have so many players on the field at one time. DUST stretches the capabilities of the PS3 to its limits. All the art assets were originally designed at a much higher resolution and then downgraded for use on the PS3, so if DUST gets ported to better hardware those higher resolution graphics can be used.
That being said, the original design team was more interested in pie in the sky ideas than efficiency, so a lot of things could have been done better. The current Dev team lead by Rattati have been trying to chip away at these inefficiencies and we have seen a steady improvement in performance, through the cumulative effects of many very small improvements. But there is still a long way to go. Getting stuck on 4 inch curbs is a well known and long hated problem. It used to be much worse though. You used to stick to walls.
As for Lag, I have a fiberoptic connection and donGÇÖt normally experience Lag, but if I fight against someone on the other side of the planet, then I will experience Lag. It is not due to my connection, it is due to his, or simply the distance between us. That being said, there are some glitches that produce further lag, or reduced frame rates. For instance Planetary Conquest matches are more prone to Lag than other match types, and CCP have not yet been able to figure out why that is.
I agree with you on accessing equipment and squad commands on the R2 wheel menu is cumbersome, but I think that is simply a problem with the DS3 controller not having enough buttons for such a complex game, which forces CCP to use less than optimal interfaces. You will get used to the Equipment wheel with practice.
The problem of getting kicked out of the queue just when it looked like you were getting deployed is a relatively new problem, and I am sure they will fix it soon. I have only been seeing this for a few weeks now.
The new Match Making system (a few months old now) seems to make more balanced matches than the old one did. It is supposed to put a similar balance of Newbs and Vets on both sides, which sometimes means 16 new players against 8 vets. This system gets thrown off though when people leave battle, and that problem still has to be addressed. Also, I think the glitch where people get booted when they are deploying may be causing problems too.
Faction Warfare does not use the new Matchmaking system. You are much more likely to get stomped in Faction Warfare. I would suggest sticking to Public matches unless you are in a Squad, until you get more experience and better gear.
The new Dev teams is continuing to try to improve the New Player Experience. They have a long way to go though, as the New Player Experience was absolutely terrible when they took over from the old Dev team.
I covered people leaving the match earlier. People staying on the edge of the map is sometimes due to them being intimidated, or because there is nowhere to spawn that is not being camped. Often dropping some good Uplinks will get people back into the battle. Every once in a while you will get into a match with 6 Snipers on your team and there is not much you can do about that other than hope some of them have the sense to switch to another role.
I favour having higher levels of active skill point gain for new players, with the rate of Skill point accumulation starting to slow down at 10 million and get to normal at 20 million. If you specialize, by 20 million skill points you should be just about equal to any other player in your specialty.
PVE would be a great help to the New Player Experience. Someday we hope to have PVE. I donGÇÖt really expect to see it until we port to a new platform though.
DUST does have a lot of problems yet to solve, but I continue to find it fun and challenging. You will probably find it more fun once you have gotten more skill points and experience. Stick with it. If you stick around you might be able to help the community and CCP make this a better game.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.

I would advise a new player who does not have 22 million SP saved up to level Engineering (+PC) and Electronics (+CPU) as needed, rather than trying to get to 5 right away, because they are very expensive skills in terms of skill points. It is more important to get your Armor (+armor HP) and Shield (+shield HP) skills up first. If you get both of these skills to 5 you will have 25% more health than a new player in any suit. Also skills cost a lot more at higher levels, so sometimes you get the most cumulative effect leveling 3 or 4 skills to level 3, rather than leveling just one skill to level 5.
Hand/Eye coordination cannot be taught. For everything else there is the Learning Coalition.
