So a while back I think either Wolfman or Remnant confirmed that damage applied to a player when their shields reach '0' will transfer over to armor and have the damage profile applied separately.
Could someone explain the math behind this, or better yet, provide an example of the formula used?
My thinking is that if a (for the sake of the example) laser round does 100 damage and hits a person's shields it'd do 120 damage on paper. So if they have 50 shields left.... Is it -70- damage that is transferred over to armor and then re-calculated for the damage profile (thus being 56) or would the original damage profile calculation occur before hand? Basically meaning, it'd be 100 damage split between 50 shields and the remainder going to armor, so it'd be 40 damage to armor.
That may sound confusing but hopefully someone can understand my question and answer it as it is sort of important for theorycrafting.

Its the latter. Its easiest to picture the damage as in transit until impact or units which are applied with the specific profile. 100 dmg (Ill use explosive) versus 250/ 250 would apply 80 to shields on 1st volley and on through the 3rd volley. The fourth volley would see the 100 points versus the remaining 10 shields. So about 12.5 of the 100 explosive damage is used eliminating the remaing 10 shields. The other 87.5 is applied to armor with the 120% multiplier ( around 105) leaving 145 armor. The fifth round applies the entire 100 damage at 120% leaving 25 armor. Then the guy using the explosive rounds gets shotgunned in the back.
It's hard to beat up hundreds of armor piercing bullets using only your face...

To be fair, the mass driver is fairly loud and telegraphed. You can hear it from a mile away, and the visuals tell you where he is facing.
Easiest shotgun kill ever

I always thought that 100 damage Laser shot deal with 120% modifier until it reach armor, and then it switching to 80%, so it's something like 42 on shield and rest on armor.
But what is funny in this penetration mechanic, and can issue more questions is that when your target is running with 5 armor left, and you kill him with shotgun, he gone drop on the floor but can be revive, like entire round of shotgun is not enough to kill his clone.

Say There is an assault with 400 shields and 800 armor. I throw a core locus at him. The core does 600 with a -20/+20 profile.
Meaning the core does 400 damage to shields and 800 damage to armor.
Since the assault has 400 shields and the core can do a max of 400 to shields, the shields are obliterated.
If you throw a second core at him, he's dead.
Now, when there is less hp, here's a new example.
Say an assault has 200 shields and 500 armor. The core does 600.
The core would only do 400 but since there is less hp, it will take out shields and start to damage armor. 200 damage is already done. Profile switched to damage armor. There is 500arnor left. 400 damage still remaining from core + it's profile that does more damage to armor means it will do 600? Damage to armor now. Meaning your dead.
I think it's something like that. If not, then it's close to what it's like. I hope this helps a bit.
