I'm talking about the classic 'Answer a list of questions to get your suggested character type'
This may seem novel or gimmicky to some, but I actually believe it could have practical applications.
At one point Dust branded itself as an MMO-RPG-FPS.
Adding an, optional system like this would help Dust in two ways.
1.) It would add a nice touch of RPG flavor to the game. New players would be introduced to the RPG elements of Dust in a fun way, rather than simply finding out they are restricted from 90% of in game content until they play a lot.
2.) This could be a great NPE tool.
Players would be asked a series of lore and gameplay questions. Lore questions would determine Race and Bloodline, gameplay questions would recommend Suits and weapons. If a new player accepts their recommended designation, then they would be given a handful of fittings designed specifically for their play style.
Examples of Lore Questions
- A faction of rebels is attempting to secede from a larger, oppressive empire, do you identify with the Rebels, or the Oppressors?
(+10 Minmatar or Amarr)
- Do you believe the masses are trustworthy for self governance, or should they be guided by a firm hand?
(+10 Caldari or Gallente)
Examples of Gameplay questions
- The enemy has fortified their position and is defending your objective, which tactics would you employ?
A.) With highly armored units, make a slow and steady push directly into their main force (Gallente)
B.) Using high damage weaponry, move in slowly while using high DpS to keep enemies suppressed (Amarr)
C.) Using speed and maneuverability, encircle the enemy, and rapidly rush their weak points (Minmatar)
D.) Look for the most tactically advantageous point and attack from long range and high ground, moving in only when the main enemy force has been killed from afar (Caldari)
- What is your preferred method of infiltration?
A.) Staying behind the front line and supporting the main force (Logistics)
B.) Remaining undetected behind enemy lines, offering intel to your team (scout)
C.) Door kicking. Being right in the thick of as much combat as you can handle (heavy)
D.) Assaulting the point head on with your teammates as a cohesive unit (Assault)
etc
etc
etc
These are examples, but a long these lines. I feel this would be more fun, immersive, and informative for new players than simply guessing everything right off the bat.

You have to be careful when wording these questions.
The wording here hugely promotes the Minmatar over the Amarr.

You have to be careful when wording these questions. The wording here hugely promotes the Minmatar over the Amarr.
Not necessarily, there are plenty who would love to be called an 'oppressor'.
But regardless, these are simply examples off the top of my head.

There used to be choices with regards to house and bloodline that affected initial sp allocation, I'd eat rather we didn't go back to that. Often people created characters only to find the initial skills they had didn't fit their play style.
I do love the idea of using lore based questions to give players some background into there character though and even helping them choose a race. The more steeped in lore and the more interaction players have with the stories that live behind new Eden the more immersive the game will be.
Now with more evil.

+1 Instead of getting the usual what suit should I spec into question from new players, they can do a questionnaire.

If I knew that amarr were oppressors and pseudo-religious tyranny to the rest of the races, my character would have been amarr, not gallente.
So yes.
Some people will giggle and choose to be the oppression that crushes the others under an iron boot.
Being the bad guy carries a certain level of catharsis that is very hard to beat.
Now... just because the amarr are no worse than gallente mob rule (seriously, gallente politics are fcked up) or caldari corporateocracy (I actually don't know the correct term, for once) or minmatar need to lash out and rip up anything in reach?
Doesn't matter. I get to oppress you.
WoW has taught me that Purple means Legendary. This means Quafe suits are the optimal loadout for killing all of you.
