So I was just gazing out into the distance whilst stuck on the defeat screen for 8-10 minutes as usual and thought to myself - do we need all those badly tessellated and rendered textures out there?
Personally I wouldn't be against some sort of pre-rendered background as long as the action was smooth inside the redline.
Would this be an option to save some valuable memory and help the game run smoother?
Instead of the draw distance being quite so far, maybe make everything after 50/100 past the redline like a 2D shape perhaps? I mean no-one is looking out that way anyway, and if it gives us more grunt for extra cover or reduces the lag one certain (cough-lab) levels - why not!?
Shouldn't be too hard to do either??
Anyone agree? |

Anyone agree? Not gumming up system memory rendering full 3d objects well over 1000 meters out of the area we play in? Terrible idea. Wasting memory is essential to maintaining a low frame rate.

Aeon Amadi wrote:Most of the memory issues stem from having to load up so many different suits and fittings and what not. CCP Praetorian mentioned this at Fanfest, stating that it was the primary culprit behind the FPS dips. Which, that being said, is also why we moved to the SKIN system and why the proposal for Power Cores is such a big deal - reducing the load on memory.
Not to say that I'm against tuning the graphics down again but I don't think the long-distance, low LOD backdrop terrain is as big of a factor as the amount of information needing to be committed to memory. If it works, sure, but I'd rather look at other options before we cut more out of the presentation.
What happened to the power cores?
I think turning down something that we don't even look at wouldn't harm the gameplay - I'm talking a fair distance away so it doesn't look silly but surely it would help |
