Do you think it could be nice to have mortar strikes in Dust 514? Orbital bombardment looks great but are not possible in every situation but Mortar Strikes would actually be available to everyone in every kind of match. Don't take me wrong mortar strikes would be far weaker than OB, but they could be a lot of fun nevertheless.
Mortar strikes could work this way.
On the ground, near you base, you have 2 fixed mortars; mortars would have unlimited supply like cannons, but also could be hacked & destroyed much like cannons. You have to have a skill/equipment to designate a mortar strike on the ground and each time you call it you pay for the bomb: costs-wise it should not be cheap
As a trade-off you can designate a mortar strike only in line of sight: no way I can sit in my base and call for a mortar strikes on the other side of the map. In this sense the perfect tool to call for a mortar strike would be a laser of some sort: point it on the ground or a vehicle and keep it steady for some seconds so for the mortar to acquire the exact coordinates. Of course no lock-on: if vehicle move away form the designated point you miss.
This is just an idea, not a request or a proposition, but it might add another layer to gameplay. |

I wouldn't mind this in tank form. A mortor type cannon you can stick onto your HAV. It would fire in an arc. This way you could lob shots great distances and over obsticales. But it would be vulnerable to direct attacks with no close-medium range main gun. (still have the small guns on it but that requires more crew members to operate). You would need people with eyes on the fire zone to direct your fire via comms. (eg, higher or more to the east) .
This way its balanced (long range heavy firepower with potential short range weakness It can be hacked or blown up It promotes teamwork (you wont be able to see what you're shooting at, need team mates directing your fire) |

Well since we are in the future manual target adjustment feels a bit dated, this is why I think that it should suffice to have a laser guided mortar strike. Highlight the ground, an object, a structure: wait a bit to aquire target, send the info the co-ordinates to the mortar and it automatically adjust everything so to hit in that precise spot. |

I'm really waiting for there to be a distinguishing Air Strike option from the OB as shown in the future vision target trailer. I suppose similar to your mortar strike but without the ground controls, and put a nice ISK price on it plus cooldown (individual or maybe team?) while the aerial ships delivering the strike turn around and realign etc... to stop any over abuse. Same target painting mechanism i think you are describing for the mortar system, call it in with a laser guided splash on desired location like the OB in the fanfest video. Naturally the AS would be much less powerful and prolonged than the OB. |

great suggestion. needs to be balanced by having the mortar person only able to see targets who have been passively spotted by his teammates for starters. |

Why not make it lock on to an area that has been called out by an infantryman? "Oi, this thing is shiny. Blow it up" "Mmmyesh, pewpew incoming".
Add a sidearm weapon that's just a laser pointer. As long as the pointer is being used, the artillery can lock on to the spot and fire away, otherwise he just has to try to dumbfire everything. |

i've always thought the targeting reticle should be the passive spotter anyway instead of the UI Overload we have right now. put a guy in your sights and now your teammates can see his position instead of seeing everything our teammates see.
an active control (like pressing select in BF3) hurts people in gunfights and slows down combat--you have to make a choice between spotting and shooting...that way we can put a guy in our sights, reveal him to the mortar guy and have him cut loose. |

If you go into the Market, under Turrets is an Option for Artillery but it says SoonTM, so when i saw that i thought of a long range artillery weapon (Mortars) |

Lock on for moving target is excessive for me: mortar bombs are not missiles capable of locking-on targets.
P.S. Also IMO spot & mark should be on the directional buttons, not on select like BF3. |

I think this is a good idea, infact i think its so fundamental i suspect CCP already have this in the pipelines.
Indirect only ofc, not for close fire base protection imo, they should be pretty squishy and low ROF. |

Artillery in Eve is a slow-firing powerful projectile that does massive damage. While it's labled "Artillery", it might not be ACTUAL artillery. Just saying don't get your hopes up, but it would make for a cool indirect fire platform. |

Mortar-style systems (firing up then at target) would be nice, but should be racial. Caldari : Ever seen a Javelin missile hit a tank? Amarr : laser-fitted disc thats shot up, then shoots a heavy beam at the target. Minmatar : Artillery of course! Gallente : IDK why, but i can't get that rolling alien thing in those Battleship ads out of my head. |

I think considering the most part of the game is planetary conquest i guess it would make sence that a area on a planet or near a defence point would be a artillary base who ever controles these instalations would have access to fire support during figths in its fire zone(where it can hit) how this could be impplemented not sure it sure would be over powered to the team with it but then again why wouldnt it be, mabye if the shells cost isk eve side or owner side and has to be resuplied with shells of multiple types EMP for example which would knock out electronics in a area, HE for general pupose rounds, ones that scatter when on aproach basilc a cluster stlye for anti infantry mabye even some exotic types, gas, smoke screen, mabye a halusagenic gas just for fun of course. |

I think this is a good idea ONLY if there is a player at the controls of the firing platform.
So, a long range indirect fire turret for tanks and such would be fine.
An automated call for fire would be bad. |
