In this thread we talk about some of our embarrassing shortcomings and misunderstandings we had as little baby clones fresh out of the vat.
When I was starting out I had no clue what scanning was. At first I was just really annoyed by it, because I had no idea what it meant but it was popping up constantly. YOU HAVE BEEN SCANNED. It would even stay on the screen while I was dead, which made it impossible to tell where someone with a needle was. A month or two down the line I finally drew the connection that, maybe, since I kept dying soon after being scanned, perhaps that meant someone had me in line of sight and was preparing to fire. Every match after that, whenever I got scanned, I would immediately duck for cover and start looking all over the place for whoever the hell was lining me up. I never did find whoever was checking out my ass, unfortunately. I did learn situational awareness and to use my peripheral vision very quickly in my efforts to find the scanner, however. |

I didn't realize there was a stamina bar. I tried to figure out when I was about to stop sprinting by the panting noises my merc was making.
I thought crouching and/or not moving would hide me from players' TACNET.

Spent my points (after creating char) on turrets operation, thinking i need them to use installations.
Back then, I could spend entire battle operating one under the point.

I joined back in closed beta- when militia logis were a thing, and the starter fits used all frame types (rather than just mediums like now), so the medic starter fit was actually a logi.
Tried running it, then I realized I had no idea what a nanite injector or nanohive was. I was quite the useless logi.
I also wasn't aware of the redline when I first flew a dropship. Was about to land on the enemy MCC (not sure what I was going for), then I managed to explode with my then-250K isk dropship.
I don't understand you re-re's who think dropships right now are hard to fly. The closed-beta flight physics were completely different, and were so agile and sensitive that there was absolutely no room for error flying them. Yet I still got it down on my first try, aside from the exploding in the redzone part.
Dropships now are incredibly forgiving, but regrettably slow as hell as well. How some people can't figure out how to fly them is beyond me.

I thought flying dropships would be easy, I laughed so hard as I couldn't figure out how to turn away from a mountain. I did avoid the mountain by pulling up, but crashed into a nearby building when I stalled I made many people make mistakes in closed beta. Back when there was no aim assist people thought continuous fire with the galente ar was a good idea, but this made it very difficult to shoot someone (at range too the fools) that was dancing hard. The dance of my people was particularly effective back then. I would get the attention of some mercs, usually 1-3 and get them move out of cover while unloading at me. Meanwhile my sniper friend was lining up a shot, I would lay a couple of bursts into them and get their shields down then laugh as they fell over one after the next. I love being bait!

For the longest time, I didn't know there was a forum, and I didn't know I wasn't forced to use the default SMG on my Logi (back in Beta, this was the default). It took a loooong time to get my KD up to snuff, lol.
My favorite? Not knowing the turret installations didn't harm the MCC. At least twice I was shooting at one when it blew up. Ahhh... the days of being a newb...

When I first started I called out a dropship thinking that while in the air I could switch seats to use one of the side mounted turrets and just leave the dropship hovering in one spot. The moment I tried this the dropship immediately plummeted to the ground and I died.

Dust button layout had me suiciding due to me be so used to other FPS titles that pretty much shared the same layout, except for Dust. I would throw grenades a few feet away, curse while still running towards, blow up and die. Hilarious.

I have OCD and didn't realize that reselecting vehicle active modules was indeed turning them off. I tend to select or mess with things several times to make sure whatever it is is working like it should. I wondered why I just wasn't getting any mileage out of hardeners. The glowing animation for cooldown did and does look the same to me as active.
I also only realized the first of this year how bad server lag is for me and how much I have to compensate for a full second delay for graphics, sound and damage registration.
