I've always liked the basic SMG, the toxin to specific, just because it's one of the first side arm weapons I skilled into because it was on my starter fit. It being free didn't hurt any either. It can hit fast moving targets well, and once you skill into it's range isn't half bad. A clip can and will melt threw most heavies, especially if you already taken out their shields with your primary weapon first. Even without softening up a heavy though if you get behind/surprise them and aim high most your shots will be head shots and they go down like a sack of potato's.
I will admit it lacks the awesome power of some of the other side arms, but the standard SMG isn't bad. I just don't like the assault because of the lower ROF. High RoF and ability to hit those pesky dancing, jumping scouts is why I have the SMG in the first place. I will say the SMG is one of those weapons though that isn't that great until you skill into it heavily though. Not just the dmg increase, but accuracy, range, clip size, reload etc all help it to be truly effective. W/O the sharp shooter skill it's drop off is pretty low, but with it it's almost as good as a riffle. |

Those were the good old days. Now a basic assault combat rifle has higher dps and range for over half the fitting cost of an adv smg. In 95% of engagements you're better off dipping in some cover and reloading than pulling out a smg.
"but ones a primary and ones a sidearm, blah blah"
Whatever.
Guess i was having some nostalgia and tried a dual smg fit only to be very disappointed. Overall smg range is terrible, which is highlighted by their low dps. Some people forget how hard they got nerfed back in the sidearm balancing days.
That is one of my biggest complaints about side arms, they cost too much. Both in isk and in CPU/PG. I don't mind side arms doing sub par dmg to light and heavy weapons. To me that makes sense. A pistol shouldn't compare to a riffle and a sub machine gun shouldn't out dmg a belt fed mini gun. It should however be significantly cheaper and easier to wield.
I almost never use advanced and proto side arms. The cost is just to high for a weapon that you 'might'' use. Especially given the long delay to switch weapons, if you don't already have them out most of the time your dead any ways. Once you get a few points into rapid reload it's faster to reload than to switch weapons in most cases. |
