^ It's been broken for a while.
You can invite people from the player list, which is good if you know someone on your team or are spamming invites to everyone.
For the people who frequently like to join squads in a battle, this is a terrible situation. It can put teams of random players or small squads at a severe disadvantage against teams composed of larger squads (now more of a FW issue than in Pubs) - but that's not what bothers me the most. I feel it greatly diminishes the new player experience. Team chat/the ability to squad in match happens to be one of the more prominent social aspects of the game for newer players. Local chat is a joke, and of course there are people in team chat with poor mic etiquette but it's a good tool to have.
Also, by being unable to view your squad channel you lose the ability to kick someone who may be disruptive, giving contrary commands to what squad lead intends, or to mute someone who may be having mic feedback issues.
Squad finder is too hit or miss to be the only opportunity outside of chat channels to find other people to play with. The only way I learned anything detailed about the game was by joining random squads of guys who played longer. Squad finder is less useful now than it was in the past due to trolls entering squads and yelling/talking bullshit on comms - block doesn't keep them out. They need to be kicked constantly, or the squad locked, which defeats the purpose of having a public squad.
You've modified squads with this last patch, why have you not fixed the in game controls for squads as well?
Always ready for Gallente FW or ambush. Stack ISK, SP, and LP. Lookin' for chill people to squad up 0200-0600. #GDOTS

What's the deal?
If you told me, that's how it's going to be from now on, deal with it...that would be a bit better than playing ignorant.
I think I've been fairly detailed in describing how it fucks up the social and cooperative aspects of your game. This game sucks to play alone when you're new.

I think removing names and such during the match was a strategy to combat lag... Though it doesn't seem to have really helped much at all.
It could also have been done to make room for the new skins they were putting in, a while back I heard they were at the memory limits of the PS3 with their coding, hence why they have such a hard time adding things like maps to the game.

I'm aware of that.
But taking away the ability to squad up with your team, in a squad combat game...

Still not even a word?
Since your matchmaking is bugged you could at least give us a better chance of teaming up with random squads when we join a match.
I really did my best to be articulate and mature about this initially, your fix for removing chat avatars really ruined a great aspect of your game.

Bump.
CPM, you got any opinions on this? Since the Devs have been avoiding it.
Between making it harder to be an academy player as a vet, and removing the ability to join squads in battle, you've crippled the newer players ways of getting advice from vets in game. Don't you want more aurum slaves?

The removal of the ability to see and join squads while in battle was a shocker and a big blow to solo play.
Personally I play solo a lot of the time but if I see the battle is full of well known corps or players I used to join budding squads to help add my WP to orbitals at the very least.
We often ***** about solos vs squads and how imbalanced this can be but how often do we stop to consider things like WarPoints and therefore orbital generation? (As this can make massive changes on the outcome of the battle) |

Very good point.
As I play solo often too when my buddies aren't around, I'll post LFS in team, and send mail to the squad leads to pick me up to make use of my warpoints. Rarely does it work out.
It's frustrating when you rack up 1k+ alone and can't do anything worthwhile with it.
If joining a random squad wasn't a feature when I began playing, I doubt I would have continued with the game.
I'll fight you.

Took me a while to find this thread but thank god I did. I was starting to think it was just me with the lack of a dev's acknowledgement of this change anywhere. |

It was done when they realised the avatar pictures in the chat were using up a lot of RAM needlessly. Hence why they removed them from the contacts list as well. However it seems when they tried to delete them from the chat, they couldn't just remove the avatar, they removed the whole container(avatar and names). Either they just really wanted to get rid of the avatars and the only option was to remove everything rather than leave everything, or they simply screwed up and no one was bothered to fix it.
Knowing CCP I wouldn't be surprised if it was either. They are avoiding this whole topic like the plague. Same for their memory leaks in maps like the Galente Lag Facility(meat grinder). |
