when can we take a look at making sense out shield regen for dropsuits?
currently the values are all over the place and dont seem to follow any particular pattern. in some cases dropsuit designs were changed but shield regen left untouched as is the case with Amarr suit when they moved from their dual tank design to their correct armor tank design.
caldari and minmatar shield regen make even less sense. look their commando suits where they have the worst stats yet theyre supposedly more focused towards regen than the sentinels are. Cal sentinels have better shield stats across the board, and cal/min commando shield regen isnt even viable.
HP/Speed balanicing has been done but we havent looked at regen yet. what's the goal or design for that?
heavier suits get better regen? |

Well spotted. +1
As a general rule I think the HP regen should align with the eHP / Speed curve that CCP Rattati has laid out.
Scouts > Logi > Assault > Commando > Sentinel...at least as a start point.
You could perhaps have Sentinels be a bit of a "zombie" option with much higher region but you really encroach into Assault and Commando options. If the Commando was reworked ground up with more focus or a refined purpose it perhaps could rank near the bottom of the regen ladder depending on the overall design philosophy.
No matter the outcome - regen needs to be organized and hand railing off the tank vs speed construct is a solid baseline.

I actually think the commando, assault and scout regen for the caldari need to be brought closer to the sentinel.
Despite claims that the calsent is somehow UP, I find that it is hands down the most viable shield suit in the game.
The minmatar don't need to run quite that tight because they can generally choose freely between shields and armor, or damage and speed or any combo of the four effectively. Versatility and generalized function is efficiency defined in some ways.
But the shield regen taking at minimum 3-5 seconds to restart rather than rapidly recharging when not under fire is a major problem that keeps the dropsuits from performing as well as gal and amarr who regen constantly if more slowly and enjoy 30-50% more average HP when fitted for such.
The regeneration of the shields is the choke point for balance, IMHO
WoW has taught me that Purple means Legendary. This means Quafe suits are the optimal loadout for killing all of you.

what about the damage threshold? i had an idea, that we could make the damage threshold a dropsuit stat we can modify by using shield rechargers/energizers.
by raising the threshold high enough, it'd be possible to gain constant regen by using weapon range mechanics to mitigate damage below the threshold. im not suggesting thresholds that allow constant regen in cqc, but perhaps high enough that some weapons wouldnt stop regen when outside of the optimal range.
manipulating shield threshold is cleaner IMO than trying to buff shield HP or regen. all current shield mechanics stay in place, with the addition of the threshold.
EDIT:
bringing the the other caldari suits closer to the cal sentinel is a great idea |

I agree that the Cal sent is hands down the best Shield suit in the game. Which isn't saying much -- not because it is a bad suit -- but because shields don't function as well in close combat as armor (which they shouldn't). Shields not functioning very well in close combat is the only reason that Cal Sent is considered UP -- all the other sentinels can hang in CQC better except the min sent which can do well as a hit and run suit.
But yes -- the Cal Sent is hands down the best shield suit. I would think the shield regen delay on it is too good for the medium and light suits, especially as their natural speed would allow them far more opportunities to regen even under fire, but the other suits should absolutely have shield regen delay and shield depleted regen delay closer to the sentinel.
As it stands, since Sents are a close range suits (generally) and Cal are shields, they NEED those regen values to be able to have any chance of competing with the other sentinels. |
