Once you let us start placing planetary installations and claiming / losing sovereignty, please consider giving us some kind of fortress system.
Basically what I mean by this, is giving us some way to build up a large defensive structure that you could only have like, say 1 to 3, maybe 4, on any given planet. I would suggest looking into a modular system for its construction, where you can buy certain kinds of modules such as (for example, random thoughts here) research lab, armory, orbital defense systems, firing range, communications tower, various defensive fortifications, training grounds, machine shop, supercomputer, something like a nuclear reactor (but higher tech), barracks, different kind of vehicle bays / air fields. possibly naval ports if you ever decide to get into that, since I don't think naval combat would ever actually disappear (could be a fun side project / new genre. On this note, you could also please a small but very dedicated type of gamers, those that are into aviation games), I think you get the idea here.
Every single thing would obviously be a physical asset in the universe. I'm not sure if placing an arbitrary limit on how many fortresses you can have would be a good call or a bad one, perhaps limiting it based on planet type. Or, seed each planet with a random amount of blank or pre-generated fortresses based on the kind of planet it is / security space / whatever. These could be captured and used as bases of operations, giving certain bonuses based on whatever parameters you can think of, using each module to help come to to these bonuses. Perhaps always have an odd number of fortresses, and you need to control the majority before certain things are unlocked for you, your corp, and your alliance.
This would be a really ambitious project, since there should be fortresses of each race, so that means fortress modules of each race. It would also need to be cleverly implemented to translate well into actual gameplay, flowing well from one section to another in first person. Also making sure that these actually confer useful benefits and provide cool ways for you to build up an HQ so to speak. Can you imagine running drills in your Alliances fortress, then actually getting into real combat as someone tries to invade and attack you? You could lock these off somehow, where you have to fight through X amount of districts before you actually get to storm the fortress. Once you're there you could get in and hack the shield systems temporarily, allowing for orbital bombardments on different parts of the fortress. Each module, in that respect, would also need damaged textures, and destruction animations.
Perhaps this a project best suited for further down the road, I just wanted to get the thoughts out there and see what everyone else thinks. Loving this game CCP, looking forward to the new build, as well as being part of something that truly is the cutting edge in multiple industries.
See you all on the field |

Yes, yes, yes. Fortresses would be the ultimate sign of dominion over a planet. Merc Corp also could use fortresses as HUB and we could even walk in them during peace time. |

So basically the DUST equivalent to a pos? +1
Although I disagree about naval combat. Why have a boat when you can have something that can fly ie: spaceship |

Resources, production, anti aircraft / spaceship weapons systems on submarines, mostly aquatic planets, etc etc. You use the navy to police your seas, I think that will be true no matter how advanced our technology becomes. They would just be, much more futuristic and that much meaner
Also keep in mind, a lot of spacecraft probably wouldn't be designed for planetary operations, basically always staying in space. That's like saying you'd never use tanks because of spaceships, yet here we are, usin tanks
I really just tossed it out there, figured it might be cool to be able to fight on board naval ships at some point, though I'd rather be able to board spaceships lol. Even if it was a purely statistical / aesthetic thing, it could be cool. I'm sure there's a ton of possible modules I'm not thinking of

Like the idea of a fortress, Since it is in an extremely far future, i'm letting my imagination run here. These could be truly massive, essentially a multi-level, ground version of a station (think a parking structure / mall hybrid sprawled out over all Manhattan). Attackers would need to start at the top and work their way to a command center at the bottom. They also have to call in vehicles from the top floor, and only after orbital-dropped soldiers destroy enough turrets to make an LZ. Defenders get vehicle depots inside (this is large enough for assets hangars) as well as a PG/CPU upgrade to place more installations with. Modular design definitely, but the type determines the "centerpiece" and bonuses therein : Industrial would have a space elevator, increasing material output of all PI in the district. They also auto-connect to orbiting stations if there are any, allowing product to automatically enter your hangar. Only one connected elevator per planet though. Military gets an automatic skyfire battery, allowing POS gun-style defense against redships. Airbase fortresses could get an upgraded airfield, allowing defenders to "spawn" as an air patrol or loaded-dropship reinforcements during nearby battles. This version also interfaces with all nearby ally MCCs in a similar fashion to an FC, boosting HP and movement speeds of those deployed by defenders. Due to military value and planetary environmental impact, CONCORD declared fortresses of this type an MWD (even in EVE's lenient terms), and only allows about 5 of each type on a planet. |
