My long and often frustrating career began in early Closed Beta and ran unbroken into Uprising. It was apparent by then that CCP wasn't able to fulfill the promise of a strategic MMOFPS, but we weren't fully aware of their intentions until we were blindsided by the "Rouge Wedding" at Fanfest 2014. I made a quiet exit, went cold turkey on the forums, and my frustration level plummeted. I've managed to forget all about DUST for over a year when I got to wondering if it still existed and how much SP I might have accumulated.
Maybe that was a mistake because 66M SP with 24M unallocated triggered the latent desire to shop for skills and upgrade my abilities. But things have changed quite a bit in over a year since I left so I'm here to ask a few questions before I commit myself to a return.
I read the Dev blogs on Warlord and dug into the forums to get a flavor for the current conditions. I found that Project Legion is dead and DUST appears to be getting some attention even if CCP isn't any better at development than before. I've read conflicting opinions on whether or not DUST will die with the PS3 or get a port. So first question, does it look like it has a future at all, and if not how long until the plug gets pulled?
It appears CCP is finally attempting to shut off the ISK fountain that was PC 1.0. That's a couple years too late as the big PC corps now have years worth of ISK in their wallets. Second question: Is that making Proto-Stomping by the PC corps as big a problem as it was back then, or is it better or worse? I just read that the price of Proto Suits has dropped significantly so maybe one doesn't have to have a rich uncle in PC to afford to run Proto in pubs.
My true love was and always will be flying dropships. I began flying when piloting first required skill and was a passionate advocate though artificial flight ceilings, the days we reigned supreme, and the days we were expensive pi+Ķatas for redline rail tanks. I hoped that the maps would open up and finally make dropships vital to a match. I see that never happened. However with EQ Bandwidth it appears there may be an actual transport role, or perhaps at minimum a role for the MCRU. Third question: What are dropships being used for now? Is there a real role for a pilot in the game as it stands? Are they more than cheap rides to sniper perches an DU on building tops?
Related to that, how viable is flying? I hear the cost of the ADS has dropped and that EQ Bandwidth has caused the FG threat to abate somewhat. What about redline rail tanks? Can one make a living flying in the present environment?
Flying was always an expensive hobby so I had a day job as well. I ran Logistics my whole career through the changing environment. I was what we called a true "Logibro" running the three R's and I made a pretty good living at it. Yes, I did deploy a ton of equipment, but it was all placed carefully to assist my team rather than harvest WP's. I figure I can adjust to the EQ Bandwidth. I read that Logis are now back in demand, or at least they were a few months ago in the posts that I dug up. How is it running Logi now? Are the Logibros enjoying the role now?
As a side note how is the MD now? The arc of the shot made it my favorite support weapon and I would enjoy firing it again.
Finally a more fuzzy question: Is it fun? I've lowered my expectations for the game. I no longer look for this to be more than a 16v16 lobby shooter, I've got another project that I've transferred those hopes to. But within those constraints is it more fun than frustrating? Is there room for solo play or a more laid back corp like Tritan Industries or Bullet Cluster used to be |

Thanks for the tips and thoughts. Unfortunately it looks like the lack of recent DS posts is due to their relative lack of utility. Only two out of nine good matches with the rest redlined? Hmmmm. |

Yeah, I noticed that. I was wondering if that was a sign from CCP or if those hamsters were just dying of old age. They only live a few years and it's been a lifetime since the start of Closed Beta for them. |
