Turns out that I was doing it all wrong when it comes to vehicles, and you can in fact use this glitch in conjunction with dropships, lavs and tanks. For whatever reason the button prompt didn't show up the numerous times I'd tried it before, but I'm glad to be proven wrong. Edited my previous post, and I hope you enjoy this feature!
