It's odd now that I think of it. I was smack dab in the middle of the Halo Combat Evolved release and never really caught on to it or any of the title games of any console.
I suppose the obvious choices for me as top characters were the old Nintendo heroes like Link, Kalas, Lloyd Irving, and more recently on the PS3-4 Geralt of Rivia, Commander Shepard, and Welkin Gunther.

I genuinely makes me feel old, and I'm all of two maybe three years older than most forum goers, that I'm one of a few who really was into the old Nintendo characters and pre-2000's RPG's

They never had to blow into the cartridge, or switch to the 2nd, 3rd, or 4th disc of their RPG.

Hell I remember when we had out first computer installed in primary school and we could play Space Invaders in the mornings!
Oh the beautiful sound ones breath makes as it rushes through the dust filled recesses of an N64 Cartidge or the satisfying click of Disc 2 slotting into position as you've just cleared the halfway point in an 80-100 hour RPG leaving you enough time to reminisce about the highlights of the adventure up until now.

Which is why I end up going Sony. Never enjoyed those games. However I suppose I understand why others do. I've just yet to see a good RPG on Xbox that I couldn't go PC or Sony for.......and my old favourites NINTENDO!

You tried apotheon on the ps4? (also steam but not free). It's a side scroller and done in ancient greek art but an rpg with some serious depth for what it is. It is really good. It should still be free. Other than that i don't know as i have never really like rpgs for console. I tried FF neckbeard reborn and i hated it right off the bat. Hail the FFVII remake!.
I loved Realm Reborn. It's like the classic Online RPG experience I never bothered with but really enjoyed because of the complexities to it.
Mind you I'm not a numbers man. Might re-roll as a Dark Knight so I can quote Batman for a bit but I won't play it for every long. Btw I know its cross console of PC but what about Xbox?
