I definitely avoided squadding up because I thought I would not be welcome because I am not got FPS and was new to the game. I was surprised that the majority of people were actually friendly. I saw someone saying the exact same thing on youtube so I was thinking it may be common

People can be nice, people can be asses. Sometimes you're lucky, sometimes you're not, but there tend to be more good folk than bad. And the bad ones generally let themselves be known pretty quickly. Just hop in a squad, see how things go, and if they don't go well, find someplace else to hang out.
A tip for everyone, new and vet. Even if you do poorly it's never your fault the match was lost. As long as you're actually trying to help you're doing good. Just be smart about it.
Hacking that supply depot will maybe keep that heavy AV from destroying your team's tank as they run low on ammo, or give your assault the extra ammo or grenades to deal with the guy coming up the stairs.
Hacking that CRU will keep the enemy from spawning there and from getting to the objective as quickly. Hell, even scanning the area for enemy up-links is important as hell. I know I spend a decent chunk of my time making sure the reds don't have an easy way in.
Even if you're running around an objective and get gunned down, maybe you were a distraction enough to keep them from noticing the shotgunner coming up behind them, or giving the hacker enough time to get the objective. A couple of times I've managed to work together with a random shotgun blueberry to flank a heavy. I run distraction and he comes in from behind for a quick shot. When heavy turns around to face the bigger threat I come back and help seal the kill. One person can turn the tide in your team's favor, but one person will never make the entire match go sour.
Unless you're low on clones or in Ambush and there's this one ******* who is literally throwing himself in front of a heavy, but that's something else entirely. Just play smart and try not to die and you're golden.
Whee, wall of text that no one cares about because I'm an optimistic guppy. |

Excuse me but what? Not your fault that the match was lost? Im sorry but if you go 1-32 and are at the bottom of the scoreboard the only thing that you contributed was that your team got cloned and with that lost the match. There are more then enough players out there that singlehandedly ruined a match because they behaved like lemmings running off a cliff. I would rather prefer to be man down then having some 1 actively wasting clones on my team.

The matchmaker kills squadding, especially for new players.
They'll be thrown into a battle far above their skillset.

I don't like to join random squads with people I don't know. I think the only time I ever joined a squad in the squad finder that wasn't my corp or alliance was when I jumped in with Spaceman Rob, because I recognized his name from the forums. Of course, we were pulled into battles on the EU server, so that was fun.
When I was new, I remember joining squads in battle, even before I had a mic. One time after the battle was over, squad leader asks squad mate, "Do we know this [Vlad] guy?" "No" - kicked.
Ultimately, though, I think there is a lot of pressure to perform well when you're in a squad. There's a youtube video out there of a squad SirManBoy was leading and they had a noob in the squad. Everytime SMB checked the squad stats and said noob still had zero, SMB was exhorting him to "DO SOMETHING!". Don't know if the noob heard or not, but that sticks with you.
I remember the last time I was in a squad with Ghost Kaisar. It was around the start of the jumpy myofibs with flaylocks and mass drivers. I was struggling with the changes and didn't do too well that match. Stung even more when Ghost commented at the EOM screen, "Vlad! You went zero and eight!".
I think random squadding can probably put new players off. More so if there's a language barrier as well.

If you die that often, yeah, you're generally better off not trying to get into a gunfight and instead should focus on hacking things around the perimeter. But I wasn't saying they didn't contribute to the loss, only that it isn't solely their fault. No one should ever feel like they're single-handedly ruining a match. Because, in nearly all cases, they aren't. It's a bunch of factors contributing to a poor game for them. Maybe they're just unlucky enough to bump into the guy running the perimeter with a shotgun, or who happened to spawn while he was hacking the CRU, or maybe they just ended up being the enemy sniper's favorite little blueberry. Maybe they're getting more and more frustrated and, as it goes on, more and more careless with their tactics, which ends up just looping for them. Hell. Maybe someone's younger sibling got hold of the controller and they're just goofing around in the match. Very few people are really bad at this game unless they're entirely new or they're doing it on purpose. Most of the time it's just a lack of skill and SP and then running into someone who has plenty of both. |
