Im actually amazed that CCP still focuses mainly on their one and truly horse which is Eve online. Other game companys would had moved on to develop new games, expand into different gaming genres etc. Dust514 is the only other game CCP successfully launched though it seems now that the game is only kept alive on PS3 to milk the players for money.
Yes we all have seen EVE:VR but i get the impression that it is more of a experiment with a unknown outcome. CCP has created a whole universe with different kind of ships, ground units (infantry+vehicles etc.). Im amazed that they havent considered to expand into the RTS (real time strategy) genre.
CCP could easily make a RTS game based either on EVE: Online or DUST 514. Both have more then enough structures and vehicles/ships to make for an interesting RTS game ala command and conquer. Eve players are more about mature and thoughtfull players so it would be a decent match for a RTS game.
But yet here we are with a missed opportunity due to the risk aversion from CCP. A rather sad story about a developer with potential ending up just with maintenance of their two games. Its a rather short list of games they developed or got stuck halfway trough.
-EVE: online (CCP's flagship which basically never changes) -Dust: 514 (the shoter with a unknown future due to a death sentenced console generation) -Eve:VR (a first person dogfight game with highly experimental VR tech which probs causes motion sickness) -Project Legion (nobody knows what the state its in, probs got cancelled or is in development limbo) -World of Darkness (cancelled vampire game which was for years in development)
Only 2 games of that list saw daylight while the rest is either in a unknown state or stright up cancelled. Its a rather absurd jump for a developer to go from a space ship sim to a FPS, a vampire game and then to a dogfight space game. I get the impression that CCP has more money on their hands and then likes to pretend to be Dr. Frankenstein in terms of game development.
So im interested to see if Eve:VR will actually become a thing and if Dust: 514 gets a sequel or gets ported to PS4/PC (Ps4 would be better cause you would stay with a rather established core playerbase).
