Continuing my series of brief introductions to games that aren't DUST on Biomassed on occasion, the second entry: Star Citizen.

I'd add a couple things-
The social module will be released before the PU. Also, a note on the PU is that it will be instanced based, unlike Eve where everyone is on the same server/shard. How many players/ships per instance is unknown at this time, but the developers have mentioned it will be well over 100 players per instance and well on track to over 200 by launch.
And feature creep is absolutely a funding based strategy. One that has worked very well. But notably, stretch goals have been discontinued as of the end of last year. It would seem that they are pretty set on what they will be releasing for the time being.
They have made an amazing amount of progress in the past year, but I would be surprised to see the PU released before the end of 2016. |

Lol.
I was going to put out the mollerz beacon but it looks like it wasn't needed.

@mollerz, thanks for the feedback. I wasn't aware social was being treated as a separate "module", I'll look into that.
I was iffy on talking about the instancing or sharding at this point because of it's uncertainty. Note that in reality, the EVE universe is not really "one server" so much as a "server cluster", and that the entire universe is not on any one "node" at a time. It's possible, depending on how they architect the persistent universe, that any division of ships between "instances" may be similar, and basically the same to the untrained eye. There's a lot of clashing and inconsistent terminology on how a "server" is defined, so I'm not really inclined to compare them in that regard until Star Citizen's PU is more clearly defined.
Stretch goals are a sensible thing, but my biggest concern is whether or not they let their stretch goals take them too far. It's definitely a good thing they finally cut them off, so they can focus on actually getting the game done.

There will be a single universe, but physical locations will be instanced. That means you can interact with any player in the game, just not everyone at once. There will be mechanisms to group friends and" interested persons" in the same instance so you can bounty hunt, etc.
That's for landing locations. Space will be handled differently, with volumes running on different servers but visible to adjacent volumes. In addition you will be able to cross from one to another and crowded volumes can be further split. This should have the effect of appearing as a vast seamless space to the player. |
