You know, a Caldari assault suit would actually be the heavy suit. An Gallente assault would actually be a light suit.
Imagine:
If only the game devs could have thought in terms of racial combat style vs. suit design instead of just trying to mirror suit types.
If Caldari are long range fighters then an assault, which would go in closer range would be bigger and more tanked while the Gallente, being quick to close range would use the light suit. Light suits wouldn't necessarily be scouts. They could be the hive and uplinks engineers rather than all equipment going to logis.
Therefore, the Gal medium suit would be the logis that would follow the assaults in and be tanked, but quicker than heavies to stay among the assaults. A Gallente heavy would be the long range support. Take the hits from distance and not try to close range.
The Caldari medium suit would be the longe range commando type suit, able to be versatile, but quicker to move about and offer long range support at several points quickly.
A Caldari light suit would be the Cal logi. Why? Because Cal have the nanohives and so the light suit would run in first and throw down the hives, engineering the battlefield. Or, they could run in after the assaults, drop the hives about unscanned and run back to range or to the next area the team wants to move to.
The Amarr would use heavy suits for assault. Move in slow, keeping a distance as they carefully close range then sit on the objective with shorter range, high RoF weapons. The medium suited logis with better speed moving about behind to offer reps where needed. The light Amarr suit running ahead or moving in behind to throw down uplinks again to engineer the field. If all heavy weapons were in the game the Amarr heavy would also sit back with heavy laser cannons for support fire.
What of the Minmatar? Light suit assaults because Min are about speed and close range like Gallente although speed is more permanent. So, Gal light suit would have less stamina overall but faster in short bursts. The Min would have a little less speed, but be the suit that keeps a permanent stamina.
The Min medium would be the logi, again for speed vs. tank balance. The Min Heavy would come in after the assaults and sit on the objectives wi their HMG power.
TL;DR making sense out of the shield vs. armor argument as well as the limitations of smaller, football shaped maps.

TL;DR Stuff about stuff that doesn't encompass racial nuances.
Slicer Executioner Crusaders Malediction I rest my case. TL;DR - Fast Amarrian ships, very ******* fast. TL;DR - Amarr have fast.
Amarr frigates thatGǪ wait for itGǪ engineer the battle by tackling so the slower tanked ships can move in with long range lasers.
Also, any self respecting Amarr would know that heavy suit is the only proper assault suit. Sit there and laugh off the hits while putting on a light show and crossing the beams.
Racial nuances is exactly what I'm stating as opposed to a largely generic suit for suit match just to have it in the game.
Honestly, the first four suits before the racial suit parity was closer to the racial philosophies.
I was hoping the Gal light suit would be THE Gal suit for everything and the Amarr heavy suit would be THE Amarr suit for everything.
