The problem is actually perception. Not that AV is too powerful and Maddy tanks are impregnable. The reality is Dust514 is nuanced. For all of Dust's balance problems the forums are driven by imbalance issues. Or, as I said, the perception of imbalance.
From the AV crowd, they want to kill any tank, jeep or ADS with the STD AV gear. Or better, with AUR/LP items so they have zero SP spent on the effort. I have some pretty tough Maddy fits. But I have lost every one of them at some point. Normally to PRO AV or a good tanker but an entire squad getting all tank-killer will sometimes catch me unawares.
In a good FPS the equipment is all balanced. A new player with skill can still survive and can get reasonable results. In Dust514 that has never been, nor will it ever be, the case. First the Merc can be STD rating all the way up to PRO (and beyond with proficiency as well, see what it takes to actually use a Thale).
What is ignored on these forums (maybe even by CCP for all I know) is the driver of the vehicle can jack the ability of the HAV up. Even a Militia vehicle can use a particle cannon. But you need skill to even equip it. The same is true of AV gear (and everything else down here in the dust). If you have a lower level tanker getting trashed by AV no big surprise. But having ADV or PRO gear (wielded by less than ADV players) not being able to kill a tank - horror show!
