I'm a fairly new player and have graduated out of the Academy matches and got somewhere between 1.5mil-2mil SP. I've followed some advice i've found on these forums and built a couple of different fittings, watched some gameplay videos, and consider myself an OK casual FPS player.
And yet I die. A lot. Constantly. To people who seem to be able to kill me by vaguely waving their weapon at me in a non-threatening manner as an after thought. Before I knew what War Points were in the academy matches, I was consistently racking up 18+ kills a fight but now i consider it a great match if i get 5 kills and manage to get my K/D ratio above 0.5. I now spend a lot of time running around dropping uplinks and nanohives and grabbing objectives when I can, I even tried a Logi suit and see if I could do any better helping other people kill things but i just died even quicker and didn't seem to get very far at all.
I appreciate I might be doing something wrong here (still trying to figure out all the fittings) but this is getting stupidly frustrating!
I'm not sure on how exactly it works. Dark magic or something like that. You say you only have 1.5 - 2 mil SP, I would assume you are in the lower tier'ed bracket though.
I remember when I first started this game, I thought the same exact thing. I died constantly and I was no FPS noob. Gear does make a difference, but at your level you should be fighting those with similar gear sets.
What it sounds like though is that you are spreading your SP around too much. First let's figure out what you want to do. You want to slay or do you want to support.
Slaying is the hardest to make SP and ISK with so I would suggest you go for a support role. Though if you must go for slayer, try a heavy suit out with a light weapon. That extra HP might make a good bit of difference.
Let's just say you want to go down the path of the logi (which can be a decent slayer as well). The first step is to decide which racial suit you want to play with. For reference (which applies to all suits):
Amar - Armor based
Caldari - Shield based
Gallente - Armor based repairs (less armor than the amar but better reps)
Minmatar - Balanced between shield and armor (fastest suits in game as well)
For a logi, you additionally gain bonuses once you reach the specialized suit to certain equipment as well as a bonus to your rep tool repair amount.
Amar - Better drop uplinks
Caldari - Better nanohives
Gallente - Better scanners
Minmatar - Better rep tool
So once you decide on a suit, the next step is obtaining gear most relevant to your suit type. For a logi, rep tools are the most important first. Let's assume you go for an amar logi though:
Armor based skills are primary to your defenses.
Rep tool and links are primary
Just to get you started on the right path. Playing to your races strengths though will greatly improve your game. When running logi, look for a heavy suit or a glob of friendly blue dots and stick with them and behind them. Use them as cover and keep that rep tool up on them.
Logis make more points which translates to more SP at the end of match. If done right, just takes a bit of practice.
