I feel like every time I got close to try and knife someone I was using a loaf of bread. Are there any upgrades that greatly increase the damage that the standard knife does or must I continue trying to knife someone 17 times in the back, then 12 in the front, and shoot them with a full mag as I'm dying to have only a small chance of killing them at all? |

There is a skill book that adds 10% damage each level. |

Sorry, its not halo. No one hit kills completely negating load out and shield and armor skills.
Knife should be a last resort weapon, specially to finish off when reloading (once they fix that). As once cloaking is in, if one/two hit was possible on any suit, far too many would cloak knife *****. Not that it wouldn't be effective against light HP scout suits sniping. Yet that's only due to small health buffer. Yet don't try and take on a heavy suit with massive armor HP and not expect it to take some time. |

It doesn't NEED to be a one hit kill but at least make it usable. I've had the same problem even with the skills. And face it, yes there's shields and armor but it's a sharp plasma/laser (I'm assuming from the concept art and the blue line that it makes when drawn) based blade. At close range, it shouldn't really have a problem getting through either. Maybe not one hit kill like every other game that over exaggerates knives but if I'm in a tight spot or out of ammo, I would like to stand some sort of a chance. |

Actually, it usually only takes 3 swings to kill most people if you have no skills or modules to increase the damage.
There is a skill that at level 5 gives an additional 50% damage to melee, which also unlocks the ability to use modules that give an additional 50% (Affected by stacking penalty).
Using 3 of these 50% modules translates into about a 120% damage bonus plus 50% from the skill, so around a 170% damage boost. That's around 360 damage or so with one swing, which is enough to instantly kill some suits with fittings that have low tank. The downside to devoting this much to melee however, is that you lose all your high slots for the damage modifier, plus your lowslots as you need to use CPU enhancers to make the damage modifiers fit. Essentially - You become a glass soldier with a totally awesome knife.

Its all a tradeoff, isn't it? |

You ever try one of those Baguettes? Leave one of those out for a day and you'll probably outdamage a Nova Knife.
Don't be so quick to slam bread like that. Bread can kill when in the right hands.
But just so I can feel like I've contributed, there is the Knife Handling skill that adds 10% damage and lowslot biotics that add... I think up to 15% each. You have options, you just choose not to use them in favor of buffing your tank / guns.
Can't have everything. |

I smell biased Nova Knife fan here ;)
Anyway all weapons must have a certain appeal since the beginning otherwise nobody will take the risk of upgrading them, especially if the result is that you become a "Glass Soldier, and as it is now the Kife it's unappealing: people will try it, find that feels /is terrible, and never go for it. |

I don't want the knife to be a one-hit-kill weapon either, but I also don't want the nova knife to be underpowered. What we are asking here is for a balanced knife. |

If the damage number is accurate, once you upgrade the knife and use one damage mod, I dont think the damage will be the downfall of the knife. It is the range, especially on a moving target. It sometimes misses even if you're literally right behind the guy and both of you are running. Chalk it up to yet another hit detection issue, so maybe it will be fixed, but I think there does need to be *some* increase in melee range. If not that, I would like to see the ability to fit a sword in the light weapon slot. |

That would be most appreciated. Imagine a specialized merc running around like RAIDEN from Metal Gear Solid: Rising slashing and dashing with a Bushido. |

A plasma sword (Dust style, not Halo!) as a sidearm sounds like a good idea. Give it a power level that has to recharge. Hits deplete the power level, which determines the damage done in each strike. Your first hit may be near lethal, put it will become worthless quickly after that until you take reprieve.
Although I think with cloaks the temptation to make a ninja kill squad would be too great |

I really am 100% against anything that will make the game akin to W40K where half of the fighting is in melee despite people shooting automatic rocket machine guns at each other.
Plasma swords leave a bitter taste in my mouth, and unfortunately I can not give a single reason as to why or give a coherent argument against them simply besides "I really don't like this idea."
The last thing I want to see are Scouts with three Speed and three Melee biotics zipping all over the place armed with some plasma katana sword chainsaw power glove automatic rotary spork dispenser. |

So no Thunder Hammer then, eh
I think we can be reasonable and draw the line at a plain (albeit plasma bladed) sword. They have been a military staple up until the last few decades after all. |
