1: Why the hell would someone bring a sword to a gunfight?
2: sword and katana are functionally the exact same thing. Hell, sword is just a type of weapon, you could say that a katana is in fact a sword.
3: Not every race would design their melee weapons off of nova tech (well, Gallente might, but I doubt they would specifically use it).

NK's are valid sidearms, used all the time in many armies of today, and will probably be used in armies of tomorrow, not only due to their utility, but due to being quiet, which NK's generally match. They are, however, idiotic primaries. You're pushing for them to essentially make primary NK's. That's silly. But I'm dumb. kk
a gun has much less limits than a sword does. can you swing a sword at something 50m away?
Adding **** is fine, skilled for **** at that. Unnecessary and just plain silly **** is not. For the lulz isn't a valid reason to add things when there's tons of other actually decent things that actually needs to be put into the game.

a riot shield or something deploable could easily be a equipment, and the submission stick could be a sidearm.

I don't have faith in anything, faith is a silly thing to have.
If said sword was a sidearm, it would make sense. But a sword as a sidearm just doesn't make sense. Also, swords aren't necessarily better than knives because they are bigger (the logic you're most likely using).
And that's a stupid statement to make.

They made them into actual weapons because people wanted to always have them out. Also, it used to be knife, not knives, as you only swiped with one.

A knife can be consealed much better, hence why it can be easily used as a sidearm. a knife can be swung faster, making it being able to have a high DPS, making it able to reasonably kill lightly armored targets in a short period of time. knives also are a lot of the time used in comparable ranges to other sidearms.
a ******* sword has none of the above.

To clarify Riot Shields are believable, to some very small degree, as weapons but they themselves are only used to protect police from thrown objects, bludgeoning attacks, and maybe ricochets. They will not OHKO dropsuits or even inflict much more damage than a punch if used to attack and should ideally always be used with a Secondary Fire Arm.
Someone trying to actally use a full on riot shield (not the mobile ones, I'm talking mil spec combat shields) are eiteher stong as **** or just dumb
