Replace your thermal past buy a lap top cooling fan ..plate ..place two wood stick on either side so your ps3 doesn't sit directly flat on the cooling plate ...maybe dust it out .problem solved ...
If it's a old phat ps3 stop playing dust on it get a slim ..

Aidualc wrote:The Problem is DUST514 ... when I play Destiny my fan runs... "normal", but each time I'm playing Dust and there are 32 players.... the fan works like a hairdryer...
Change the termal paste, clean the dust and put 2 blocks of wood as somebody say.
I have a Old Fatty (80gb), 4 USB ports, Card readers... Backwards Compatibility... Blueray-dead .. but still running. Don't play dust on your phatty..seriously bad idea i gave a phatty with a 750 gb hdd and an upgraded cooling system ...it's a backwards compatible model and has a CPU GPU ..heat monitor on it ..dust is death to old ps3s..use a slim this is why I gave 2 ps3s..dust damn near killed my beautiful baby

Well since you already put a hole over the fan, here is what you need to do to make it actually work properly.
Since the hole is on the bottom, the first thing you will need to do is make some kind of stand or extra thick rubber pads to lift the chassis off the ground.
You will need to make the hole a larger diameter than the fan by about 1/4" (A heat gun wont exactly get you precision)
You will need to find a 1/2" thick foam piece you can cut that is a larger diameter than your fan.
Place the circular foam cut out between the plate and chassis around the fan. (Hint, dab of elmers glue on bottom of plate will hold it long enough.)
While the hole sounded like a great idea in theory, the PS3 fat boys rely on the metal plate you see around the fan for cooling which you will see has a few aluminum fins in there also. The heat blocks attach to copper tubing which attach to that large piece of metal to dissipate the heat. Before you cut it, the air would pull in from the front/side vents on the bottom, move up through the fan and pushed back out the vents on the back. This would move over the "heat sink" cooling them.
You have effectively cut your cooling down by taking away part of that airflow over the entire assembly regardless of the amount of air now going through. This is why you will now run hot.
Option 2: Cover the hole back up. (best option)
Option 3: Fully modified rig with 3rd Party oversized Heat Sinks/Fans made for CPU's.
Now the PS3 Slim benefits greatly from putting a hole up top and is extremely easy to do so :) With many how to guides online. The only difference I would do is use a vent cover with filter. |

My phat has a lot of third party hardware ..I'm telling you ..doesn't matter what mods you have on a phat ps3 .dust will kill it eventually or at least shorten it's life
I've noted an obvious continuous increase in lag on my phat as my CPU and GPU monitors tell me heat is rising ..btw i played plenty of other ps3 games hundreds on that machine for sometimes 18 hours straight ..and have never had its heat rise as much as in dust ..One night it scared me II cut my machine up mid natch walked out if my house and bought a slim ..it has a cooler CPU ..it runs cooler all together ..and it takes more time to heat up before I start lagging ..I've noticed better performance on slim vs phat..
of course this could all just be ramblings of a half baked gamer ..but dust definitely heats my phat up way higher than anything else ..and I have the after market mods to tell me ..i can just glance at my ps3 and read the digital screen i installed telling me exactly how hot it's getting And slim benefits greatly from an air hole on top but like u said a filter is needed
