The new UX changes suggest a few possible updates for the player inventory as well as a possible connection to the Battle Finder*.
Allow each player to make small number of specific fits. Each item in the fit would be limited to a particular level. Militia, Standard, Advanced, Proto. This includes weapons, high, low and equipment slots. One might suggest (as others have) that the race of the suit and/or weapons be a limit as well. That is beyond what I am proposing as a first step. Although it might draw interest in FW and PC.
This should require a limited amount of code. A template for the suit, not a suit itself. Once the template was established the player can set that to a default. In game the player will only be offered suits that match the template. The UX would have to flag all suits that fit the template. If they have none then searching for a battle based on it would be prohibited.
Next a battle could be searched for that allows this fit. This allows Proto Only or No Proto matches. Pub matches by those with proto gear would only be against fellow players with equal proto gear. The mostly disused Meta levels might play a part for officer weapons that don't require Proficiency levels.
Two possible solutions for battle finding and/or matchmaking. First example would be easiest, a flag for use of a level of gear. This would be the default for new player matches. Although all standard templates would be CCP owned, all Militia, all standard, etc. and thus not available to player rewards (see next statement).
Additionally if a player makes a template, they can request a battle based on it. Their template is offered as the limitation for the battle. If nobody joins, well that looks like it wasn't a good suggestion. If they continually get matches a possible reward could be issued as an incentive. This might be worth considering if the player count is high enough and player templates are interesting enough or different enough from the standard CCP provided, all Militia, all STD and such.
During game play the UI will limit all players deployable suits to the match template. No other equipment can be purchased (performance improvement) or retro fitted during battle. One suspects that restock to for the matching suit would be all that is needed but can be excluded if necessary (a stretch goal as it were). If the player has no suits that match the template they are unable to deploy and, hopefully, would not be included in the match anyway.
It might be necessary to allow a fall back fit, if the desired match is not found. Thus a player would ask for a battle with a STD template but was willing to except a battle with the default condition. Which is essentially what we have today, allow anything.
* I have recommended this in the past.
My favorite tank is a Lightning. Just sayin.
