Hey guys it's Friday again so here is this week's guide over at Biomassed.net. I wanted to write something for new players to look over to get a general view of the weapons available in DUST. Since Light Weapons are the largest and most robust group, I decided to start off with those. Now bear in mind that there is some interpretation involved in describing these weapons, and while these posts will be updated to coincide with changes to balance and meta, I tried to remain as generalist as possible. So for example when I say the X-Weapon is great in close quarters because that's its intended role and the current balance pass places another weapon arguably better at close quarters combat...try not to freak out. I tried to remain accurate while still respecting the weapon's design.
That being said I'm just one guy, and if you feel I'm misrepresented something and would like to share you own personal experiences I am not opposed to making updates to the post. This is after all meant to be a resource for new players, and not a personal opinion piece. Additionally I just added my own personal tips and tricks to the various weapons, but my no means am I an expert in all of them. if you want to offer up your own tips to new players for a weapon, please post it here or in the comments and I'll be more than happy to add them.
A Fundamental Guide to Light Weapons
And as always, thanks for reading!

And the laser rifle *does* have small increases to base damage per tier as well as its scalar going from .85-1.10
According to the database
Basic Shotgun Optimal Range: 4m Effective Range 19.8m Absolute Range: 22m
Breach Shotgun Optimal Range: 5m Effective Range 19.8m Absolute Range: 22m
And thanks for the correction on the Laser Rifle, will fix that.

Take a look at it's efficiencies in game, the standard shotgun doesn't lose damage as fast compared to the breach.
I'll have to test that out then, but I'd be surprised if the game didn't reflect the database it's pulling from.

At some point yes, though I may have to enlist some more help for that one, since I run Commando and Logistics the most so Sidearms are not my forte.

Not much of a Reddit user but I will take a look. If it's something someone else wrote I would have to get permission before transfering it over.

Ok I just checked the differences in ranges between the shotguns in-game.
Breach's Optimal is at 5m Basic's Optimal is 4m
They both have basically the same Absolute Range, around 22m
They both have similar Effective Ranges around 20m
Only difference I noticed was around 10-15m where the Basic ended up having slightly better efficiency than the Breach.
So.... I think that's going on is they simply have slightly different falloff curves. Slight difference, not really enough to throw a fuss over, but the fact remains that the Breach doesn't offer really a considerable advantage in range given all of its downsides.
