A new post on Biomassed.net by Aiwha Bait (He's out of town for the weekend so I'm pimping it out for him)
The Pros and Cons of PvE in DUST 514/Project Legion
Excerpt:
Quote:For the longest time, DUST 514 players have been asking for some sort of Player-Versus-Environment gamemode, which included destroying drones and hacking installations. I personally would like to see a sort of PvE (even if it was in the form a training room where I could test suit setups against drones). With my thoughts of PvE in mind, I polled the forums in both General Discussions and Features and Ideas Discussions. The DUST community was very helpful, as it tends to be, and was very sarcastic and butt hurt sounding (big thanks to Godin Thekiller for GÇ£modeling the evening ware from the GÇÿBitter VetGÇÖ lineGÇ¥, as Cross Atu stated). Both players and forum warriors gave their two ISK about the pros and cons that they saw in PvE. continued...

Pros: Improving the NPE. First steps to a real tutorial. The possibility of having a test range. Variety. Having somewhere to go to do carebear stuff when you're not in the mood for a hardcore fight.
Cons: If PvE is popular then we could have major matchmaking issues as the queues will get that much smaller. PvE as the current team would be able to implement it with few devs, shoestring budget, and very limited hardware would almost certainly be very boring, shallow and repetitive. I'm not blaming anyone for this (well maybe CCP Hilmar for gutting the team), but it's just the reality of what we have to work with. As for my fantasy-land ideal of how PvE would work: see the link in my sig.
Best PvE idea ever!

Think long term. This isn't a come-out-with-a-new-version-every-year game, this is a game designed for the long haul.

The people playing Dust for the PvP will continue to do so - and the lack of people who want to play but not be competitive having the option of PvP instead will only help make sure the games stay heated with players aiming for the win and not just to **** around.
They'll have PvE for that.

The player base is TOO SMALL.
No one Ques ambush anymore because they don't think anyones playing it. 1 day when alot are playing PVE Dom servers will go, then Skirmish.
Look at FW, it needs to be 'kick started' |

Great article Bait, synthesizing ideas and a little flavor of the forum culture as well. Ripley's idea for contracts as a reward from PvP matches is particularly interesting. Selling contracts could certainly be lucrative.

Look at FW, it needs to be 'kick started' PvE can be a huge catalyst for growth.
Imagine you are a relatively new player; maybe 2 - 4mil lifetime SP. You play a few public contracts one night and get your ass stomped. You decide to finally try a PvE contract. Low yield, something you can solo. It takes about 15 minutes to complete. You earn some ISK and some SP and you cooldown. Now you aren't raging at "that ******* in the MinAssault". You then rejoin the public match queue.
See how that could have gone differently? How many new players do we lose because they quit Dust post-getting their ass handed to them in a match? How many simply get bored at doing the same old PvP grind for hours?
Keeping players playing Dust with different activities leads to more players sticking around. When they stick around they buy more aurum and they end up playing more PvP matches.
And if you read the article (which doesn't sound likely), I suggest doing PvE requires an item called a Salvage Contract that must be obtained either from doing PvP or from purchasing it for a hefty amount of aurum. By requiring PvP in order to PvE we are preventing the queues from drying up the first month or so PvE launches.
By the way, the extra aurum PvE generates for CCP could mean the different between a 6 person dev team and a 7 or 8 person dev team. More staff working on Dust = a better game for everyone.
Look at the big picture, homie.

That way more people would play the game in the future.
However, Dust 514 on the PS3 does not require this.

Wanna sees for New Eden lobby shooter PvE
1) PvE content generated by PvP content and requiring interaction with PvP corps.
PC is the important one. Drone maintenance contracts for the bigger landowners should drive PvE in Dust: Drones degrade infrastructure/profitability/defenses, PvP corps need to hire PvE manpower.
The interactions between the PvP landowning corps and the PvE corps would be a huge value-add for Dust.
FW would generate Ripley's tradeable salvage contracts.
2) Robust contract system to facilitate PvP/PvE interactions. And PvP/PvP interactions. And PvE/PvE interactions. And salvage. And Reselling contracts. And ease-of-access for new players.
There is crazy potential in contracts for emergent player-driven content generation and immersion. This would be a huge win for New Eden.
