Dearest Nerds,
I have decided to acquire an solid state drive for my PS3/DUST so I have all the advantages that come with it over those that do not have one and I might mock them either in my head or perhaps a more open venue likes forums...
So I would like some tips on which will best suit my needs.
I already have a PS4 and I understand it supports no less than 160GB, when DUST or my PS3 die I will eventually move the SSD to my PS4. I want the biggest drive i can get for a good value. I am not interested in a "hybrid" drive because I do not want to be in the position of wondering whether if I went full solid state I would get better results.
So, please, your tips and suggestions... Thanks in Advance!

EDIT: they get very pricey very quickly. I would be wary of putting one in a PS4 unless you only plan on playing a couple of games; PS4 games have a bad habit of having 40GB installs.
Guys, we need to stop calling MU a 'matchmaker' when it's actually a 'teambuilder'.

Not worth the small boost it gives you, but if you still want to be 1337, I can say that the Samsung 250gb consumer model is working wonders on my PC.
Although, I hear the one that Intel has its amazing. I think it was Intel. The white one with a skull frame on it. |

Although, I hear the one that Intel has its amazing. I think it was Intel. The white one with a skull frame on it. Samsung is arguably one of the best; it has different series though and as others pointed out it's not much of a benefit except for the lower heat.
Corsair and PNY are also good brands as well. a few tests have been done and one of the most recent one I came across is at http://arstechnica.com/gadgets/2015/03/consumer-ssds-benchmarked-to-death-and-last-far-longer-than-rated/ The intel one, while better than the Kingston new revision models, are still pricier and for the cost-to-benefit ratio a Samsung, Corsair or PNY would be better.
I'd still go maybe hybrid or a red edition western digital for the PS3 if you're wanting longevity. |

I use Kingston SSDNow V300s for non-critical things like my PS3 because they're cheap and they work.
It's totally not worth it to buy a Samsung 840 or 850 series for a PS3, it's just silly.

O_o Well, even Metal Gear Solid 4, which is a PS3 game from 2008 takes up all 50 GB of the blu-ray disc and would have taken up even more but they decided to cut lots of content from the release so it would fit on one disc.
Don't believe me? Google it. The digital release version is probably much more compressed since I believe that is only 33 GB or so.

i applaud you for getting a SSD. Things in dust run far more smoothly/faster and i have had only 2 hard freezes since. as far as getting one for the PS4, i would only get one if i could get my hands on a 1TB SSD. However they run $450USD and i dont have that cash to spare currently. when looking for pricing remember that they cost around $0.50/1GB with a slight discount the larger you get. once again, I would love to get a SSD for my PS4 but cost will be the preventing factor as I refuse to go with a smaller SSD

If you insist on having the SSD i would go for Samsung...
However, i don't feel that would be a greater advantage over a hybrid HDD, or even a WD Black (7200 rpm), like mine installed on my PS3. (750GB)
The speeds the SSD can handle are probaply too fast for the PS, for ps3 anyway.... Have to check for ps4.... If that should be the case, it's just a waste of money... Unless you got plenty to spend and want to share? (Also willing to accept ISK)

Buy a cheap one now. Don't recycle it in the future, just buy another cheap one, it will be better.
My current SSD is a really old Patriot SSD... I pulled a 6 year/old SSD out of an old XP Pro machine and it works fine. I load almost as fast as everyone else who uses an SSD. http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/SearchTools/item-details.asp?EdpNo=3956992

Agreed. The only thing you need for a SSD that's going into a PS3 is build in Trim support. Go with the cheapest that you can get with that built in and you won't go far wrong.

You are correct neither the ps3 or ps4 make optimal use of high speed drives or SSDs.
PS3 = Sata 1 port = 1.5 Gb/s
PS4 = Sata 2 port = 3 Gb/s
PC = Sata 3 port = 6 Gb/s
A SSD that is not sata 3 may exist but I have not seen one.
@OP
HDDs have caught up to read / write speeds of the SSDs that we were all installing before to optimize the game. Even something like this WD Black will perform as well as the SSDs that we all flocked to before.
My point is do not let what ifs make your decision for you as modern hard drive technology is far past the technology in both the PS3 and PS4. |

All sata drives are backwards compatible I am only pointing out that modern hard drives are all way past what even the PS4 has.
For the real PC elitists there is this beauty which has nearly double the sequential read / write speeds of a standard SSD connected via sata 3.
I have yet to toss one in my PC but I am strongly considering it. LOL Consoles.

There are occasional issues when it comes to mixing very old boards with newer drives but other than that it is all backwards compatible. Currently the only difference between SATA I and SATA III is the transfer speed itself which is why we can do things like put a SATA III SSD into the PS3 which only has a SATA I port.
Why Sony went with SATA II on the PS4 I just really do not understand. SATA III has pretty much become the standard and considering the dependence on downloaded games that Sony is pushing for SATA II just does not make sense.They are attempting to cache everything on the DDR5 ram which is just weird as hell to me since SATA II can not even come close to sending through the speed needed to take advantage of the eight core architecture and DDR5 ram.
Poor planning like this is why steam boxes and "PC Consoles" are going to put a huge dent in the console market in the coming years. |

I used several SSDs in PS3s.
60-120GB will load you into MCC earlier but not into match as fast.
240GB+ will load you into battle faster.
Reason: (my opinion) 240GB+ SSDs have more than one nand strip allowing striping of data like RAID 0. In lay terms, the higher the capacity (120GB blocks)the better the read/write times. Get an older SATA II (3Gb/sec) or cheap drive if possible.

The only possibility I see of there being an affect there is the cache of the drive. I say this because the SATA I port of the ps3 is not going to allow for the difference between the two drive types to have an affect.
Were the different size drives you used the same or a different brand? Personally I see the warbarge and am the first into battle and I am using a samsung 840 pro 128gb. |
