Disclaimer: This post really belongs in the Features and Ideas forum, I know...but I thought I post it here so more people see it.
I think a big part of the Lag is the ability to manually select which battle server to play on. The only thing this feature achieves is to allow players to deliberately select a "bad ping" server to obtain some advantages in-game.
I honestly see no other benefits to it, so please educate me if you have another opinion.
The option should be removed and the setting set to "Automatic" for all players. Let the matchmaker decide in what region to play.
Will this eliminate lag? Of course not. Will this help FW or PC? Not as much since these modes depends heavily on squading up with players around the world. Will this help casual Pub games? Yes, I think it will.

Krixus Flux wrote:Ah, this again just worded differently.
"Tell the Asians to play on their own servers!"
"Damn Spanish folks need to play on their Latin america servers!"
Days later, still dying to lag.
"Devs, I'm leaving your game! No you can't have my ISK. I'm coming back tomorrow"
Not at all. It's just a matter of getting players with similar ping to automatically be matched together, regardless if they live in US, EU or Asia. With an manual "override", it makes it harder (or impossible) to do this...
As stated in the OP, please tell me the benefits of manually selecting which region you want?

The context of my post is that no matter what, you will still have lag.
I know. Especially in a game like Dust where we live in a "single shard" universe. It will be inevitable people from across the globe play together...and thats the point. (It's one of Dust greater strengths againt the competition, which splits up their player base by region)
But in this kind of environment, you really need to have a matchmaker that takes this into account. (And I think they do). But it does not matter if any player can "overrule" the matchmaker selection when it comes to ping and latency.
I have still not heard any good arguments (or any arguments at all in fact) why manual region selection is prefered/ beneficial.

I honestly see no other benefits to it, so please educate me if you have another opinion. I don't wholly disagree with the idea, it might help the lag (a bit.) But there are people who get to know others around the world, or people who move to another country and still like to connect with people in another country. So basically an other reason would be for people like that, to still play together. Another reason would be the small amount of people you'd be playing against on a regular basis... I mean, it's already pretty bad, every match has several of the same players in it, day in and day out. Also, I doubt it's the only reason of lag, because you can play against the same bunch of people in a pub match, then you go PC with/against them and it all goes to ****... Something horribly wrong with PC.
The thing is, you can still play (and find) players from around the world even if you have your region set to Automatic. I know, because I have. I am not advocating a hard lock to your own region, like some other posts.
As for the lag improvements, I don't think it will affect anything outside of Pubs to be honest. The main point I am trying to make: If there is no benefits having it, and removing it might improve lag even slightly, why not remove it?
It's basically similar to the new (indirect) performance improvements like automatically removing old e-mails and chat channels, which should come in 1.1. |

The troubleshooting aspect I do understand, and haven't thought of. Good point.
As for your second point (switch based on time of playing), won't you get the same effect if on automatic? I maybe got this all wrong, but if automatic won't it select another server if no matches are available in your own region?
I have always had my setting to automatic, and I usually find matches within 30seconds whenever I play. |
