What is it the determines when you frame skip and teleport around?
I was just in a match that was all well and fine, then all of a sudden I start chasing a guy near a CRU and I get massive Frame Jumps.
So what is it that causes this? Is it my connection or is it someone else connection? |

Was going to post about lag as well. It has been worse since fanfest. Any ideas about its cause as Miku stated is greatly appreciated.
Yesterday was the worst I have seen since the inception of PC when it began.
Not sure on connection as I was told I was lagging yesterday and I have a fibre optic connection.

If it's just one guy teleporting around, it's very probably his connection.
If you have framerate issues, there are many possible reasons. |

What causes lag?
1 Phsyics - the speed of electrons can only go so fast; having a game talk to a compute located on the other side the planet is going to experience lag. Similarly people on mars would have the worst lag at 18 minutes.
2. Netcode - How infomration from the client and sever are shared between each other is also fairly important; included is lag compensation or how the game attempts to cover through the magic of mathmatics and predictive behaviors figures out the story before they happen. While most mmos can manage even up to as much as 3 seconds of total lag without any loss of quality in game play; Shooters cannot tolerate more than a second at times.
3. Fake lag - Performance Drops - Many gamers would call a drop in game performance also lag; Some games are poorly optimized but the connection can be superb without any issues. This can make it appear there is lag as the platform struggles to keep up with the proper story as the frames cannot fully reporesent what is going on. This can be easily resolved by lowering graphical setttings further.
4. Hardware imposed lag - This is similar to fake lag save for the simple fact that it is the hardware completely at fault rather than the graphical aspects. But essentially hardware imposed lag is anything that takes away the softwares ability to comphrend the received information quickly. This is most common on systems that are multitasking or have shared resources. This kind of lag is rather unusual but it can still happen; side effects can be cancellation in input, frame rate drop, crashes upon activation of another hardware, disconnects or if a massive story change received from the server a total lock up as the traffic jam becomes too great to handel and too much to catch up.
5. Software/network imposed lag - simialr to hardware the cause is from other programs running; The usual accusation of this would be the snide recommendation to stop downloading ****. Which is rather accurate association as other running software can cause this; Sloiwneess in updates; crashing out; running out of memory and many other kinds of symptoms can lead to this. Also this can be an internal issue with the software in question; For example do you really need to stream in real time what your friend is doing in another battlefield? While neat it would seriously wreck your own game as it would almost equated to trying to run two of the same game. Poor coding can also lead to this with bad optimization of actors, graphics, sound, and networking redundancies.

Why would anyone's internet connection have anything to do with frame rate?
Looking at both sides of the coin.
Even Aurum one.

Here.. moslty cuz of players. I've had many smooth battles, mostly versus randoms. Then ceratin player or squad joins in and the lagfest begins. As soon as you're near them, things go crazy.

It can be one or the other or both, if network traffic gets interrupted each players running game tries to compensate. this is why you can see a player running in a straight line and then suddenly jump back to where they should be. the data packet containing what he was doing is skipped, the game fills in the gap based on the last thing he was doing (he was running this way so keep him running this way) and when the next packet comes in the game updates to the latest place where he should be.
as a general rule if you see one player lagging/jumping around its probably his connection. if everything is jumping around and lagging then its probably yours

Most people are oblivious on these forums and equate this to "Latency" based Lagg.... Which it isn't.
CCP's servers ping well and most people ping well to CCP's servers.
Where we have trouble is when our PS3 Client and CCP's servers start having to share and update information between each other. While adding the complexity of having the same problem going on with the enemy your fighting.
Often when you shoot an enemy on your client.. That enemy is standing in a different spot on the Server... And then standing in even more a different spot on that enemies PS3 client. This huge "Lagg" on Server/client updating...
Is what a majority of the "Lagg" that people complain about in DUST is.
It is terrible Server/client updating issues due to challenged net code.
So you see an enemy in one place... The server places it slightly in a different spot, and the enemies client is updating the position with a delay to which the server is updating your client with a delay... When you finally fire... The server then uses a Math algorithm and largely "Predicts"(Fancy word for Guess) the outcome of the confrontation.
Which largely has the feeling as if a Dice was thrown into the air to determine the victor.. Which in most cases it was. |

Been meaning to mention this for a while now.
I've noticed sometimes when the orbital audio sound begins, my screen stutters for a split second. This is long before any visual effects, assuming I even see the visuals.
I have very few laggy games in general.
If the Gal research facility is problem more than others, is it only for domination matches or when the objective in that building is highly contested? My thinking is if the problem is audio, could it be related to echo in that area? You've all the passageways, lots of activity around the supply depot down the tunnel and around the corner, etc....
And if it's something that begins then doesn't stop regardless....memory leak?
Probably this has been suggested before but if it's a clue for CCP to look at..... |

Corproations can also begin to reject such type of high quality packets games demand because they simply don't like servicing you. Now where the fault lies is very debatable. So you're a spy for the amar? Spying on Cal, I see. I spy for the min and gal. |
