DiablosMajora wrote:PC is the most ideal scenario. It offers unparalleled options for development. Once the edges have been ironed out and development has good momentum, THEN consoles are an option. IMO, realistically, by the time DUST is ready to make a platform switch the PS4 may well be at the end of its lifecycle. We've been down that road once before.
Dust would have to compete with goat simulator, Minecraft, hearthstone, farming simulator and CSGO.......
I'm not kidding.
Matchmaking will boost the ps3 capability by 1000% and we can enjoy Dust for years to come......

Another thing, if you are going to engineer/dev a game with a specific game engine that runs a game that will go through a decade or so of evolutions.. you are going to have to face facts that in that time frame you will be converting to updated engines and hardware.
As long as Dust is on the PS3 I have to agree, but the second they use UE3 for anything else it becomes detrimental.
Whether or not it makes sense is less of an issue than if the costs to switch engines is exceedingly high. I'd hate for CCP to feel like they MUST use a new engine on PS4 and therefore stop themselves from moving to a new console because they can't afford to change the engine.
Wasn't it announced that the UE4 is availabe for free anyway or was that UE3?.
Yes, here https://www.unrealengine.com/blog/ue4-is-free

Outside of sticking with the PS3.. sticking with UE3 is just as bad. CCP is dealing with the same issue that a lot of developers are. Once you have heavily modified UE3 to fit your needs a switch that big is almost unthinkable. In many cases that is correct. Mostly with one off title releases. With regards to CCP it just doesn't make any sense. To keep Dust on PS3... odd as it is. To use UE3 for legion? That is just beyond the pale. To use it for PS4? Again, would make no sense to stick with UE3. They have already announced that UE3 was being used for Legion so it is not as beyond the pale as you think. A modified version of an engine can live on far past the release of a newer version due to the fact that it is now like a well fit glove as oppose to a one size fits all glove straight from the store. This seems to be the main reason that the larger multi title studios end up going with a proprietary engine to avoid decisions like this and create a far more long term sustainable environment.
UE4 is completely free now anyway so whether they use the custom UE3 they have or start fresh with UE4, shouldn't be a problem.
@Thread
So that mitigating point against a ps4 or pc port can now be laid to rest and not be used as any kind of excuse.

No, its not. It is free to develope but you have to pay them when you start to earn money.
Where did you get that from?. I'd like to see.

That depends on the quality.

He he. Yeah I did, I just wanted to see how you'd react and you was very graceful.
10/10.
OK so I guess it all depends on how much of a cheapskate CCP wants to be. Word is that dust is profitable.
