Interesting discussion.
I'm very disappointed CCP Rouge wasn't there. Also, I completely disagree with the point of lasers being different colors just for the hell of it. That's tacky.
There are times when DUST should differ from EVE, like the complexity of EVE's damage types and ammo is unnecessarily complex, or overheating modules and burning them out/repairing them with nanite paste etc. But there is a lot more DUST should be taking from EVE like rich ewar (target painting, tracking disruptors, webs, neuts, sensor damps etc.), capacitors, shield repair, the richness of module choices, etc.
Having lasers with colors that represent their ranges is one of those aspects that should be brought over. We can have heavy beam lasers, light turret beam lasers and heavy turret beam lasers (even a shorter range beam variant--perhaps the assault?), all with different ranges and corresponding colors. This gives tactical information to your enemy and adds richness to the game. We loose the ability to do this when we start using different colors just because they're pretty. That's shortsighted and could limit cool gameplay opportunities down the road.
I really wish CCP Rattati (the rest of the DUST team too) could spend a few hours each week in frigate brawls with Red vs. Blue in EVE. I think capturing that fast-paced style of EVE combat would be excellent for DUST and work well as a model for how vehicle combat should work in DUST. DUST would be a lot richer if our lead developer had a better connection to EVE (the intense, fast-paced parts at least). It's great that CCP Rattati has a background in FPS games (that's a must really), but to truly do DUST justice they need to really "get" EVE (perhaps to a lesser degree, but it still needs to be there).
I'm most excited about player trading and the proposed matchmaking improvements. Player trading is much needed, and if Boosters can be sold for ISK, it is my hope that this can be used as an analogue for PLEX in DUST. If we ever got to the point where real money could be used to get ISK through a reliable market mechanism, the next logical step imo, is to delete all AUR gear (excluding BPO's) - converting it to the equivalent ISK versions, and unlock STD, ADV, & PRO at level 1 of the respective skill. This would radically clean up the database, and the market windows. That's a kind of tiericide I could get behind because anyone can use PRO stuff, it's just a matter of having the ISK to pay for it.
I'm pretty sure revenue would go up with this model.
Best PvE idea ever!
