we all know that the ads is the most used ds in the game. Ds are mostly used in the beginning of each match
Here are ways to improve both in different areas.
Dropships
1. Give bonus to turrets on dropships to make them better at dealing damage and suppressing enemy while deploying/extracting friendlies from area to area.
2. Slightly increase speed and maneuverability to make them better fliers. Buff just enough that they are still under assault dropships.
3. Increase Myron shields (it's too weak)
4. Give more bonus wp for dropping/picking people up. It's one reason most don't use them the whole game. It's not worth it. There are better ways to get more wp
5. Give a racial bonus. Gallente- equip an afterburner and get 10% more passive speed and maneuverability. Caldari- equip 2 or more extenders and get 10% more hp (shield)
6. Allow only assault, combat, rail, and scrambler rifles to shoot when not in gunner seats. Add a skill in these weapons to allow ability to fire out of ship.
Assault dropships
1. Remove the 2 passenger seats and only leave the 3 gunner seats. No one really like being in a dropships for so long, especially when you don't do anything.
2. Racial bonus Gallente- 5% damage to weapons (so that it could be used more as an option with missiles which is currently preferred on Python) Caldari- resistance to blasters 10% (low shield hp lets blasters CHEW you up)

Dropships
1. Give bonus to turrets on dropships to make them better at dealing damage and suppressing enemy while deploying/extracting friendlies from area to area. Dropships REALLY do not need this, in essence this is what the assault dropship is for. Just my opinion.
2. Slightly increase speed and maneuverability to make them better fliers. Buff just enough that they are still under assault dropships. While I do not disagree, they need to be anything but close. There has to be a legitimate difference in "feel" between the ships
3. Increase Myron shields (it's too weak) What?? My Myron is practically indestructible. I always run with a gunner and we can take swarm launchers head on without worry.
4. Give more bonus wp for dropping/picking people up. It's one reason most don't use them the whole game. It's not worth it. There are better ways to get more wp I agree with you whole heartily
5. Give a racial bonus. Gallente- equip an afterburner and get 10% more passive speed and maneuverability. Caldari- equip 2 or more extenders and get 10% more hp (shield) I wouldn't be against a bonus, but these bonuses seem out of place. Perhaps Myron can get Shield Regulator Module Efficiency bonus and Grimsnes can get Armor Repair Module Efficiency bonus?
6. Allow only assault, combat, rail, and scrambler rifles to shoot when not in gunner seats. Add a skill in these weapons to allow ability to fire out of ship. *Shrug*
Assault dropships
1. Remove the 2 passenger seats and only leave the 3 gunner seats. No one really like being in a dropships for so long, especially when you don't do anything. I use the extra seats to transport 2 extra people at a time, while I have a gunner. These can be HMG users, scouts, snipers or Forge Gunners to help with whatever task my ADS is taking off to perform.
2. Racial bonus Gallente- 5% damage to weapons (so that it could be used more as an option with missiles which is currently preferred on Python) Caldari- resistance to blasters 10% (low shield hp lets blasters CHEW you up) Room for debate about modifying current bonuses, for sure.

I would suggest bring back the logi dropship with no guns then you have a choice between 1: ads, good firepower but limited transport 2: logi, good transport and survivability but no guns 2: normal, similar to basic suits, no specialisation, some firepower, good transport but not as good survivability

#4 is pretty much the only thing really needed. The main reason you tend to see ADSs is that nobody wants to use a dedicated transport, so bonusing the pilot and the transported troops would go a long way to improving the situation.
Godin has a good thread with ideas for specialised dropships, this sort of thing would work for normal dropships too. Higher WP rewards for the pilot (such that people want to pull out a ship) and then some kind of small reward (like the objective bonus) for those dropped off would add to the role in a large way.

ADS were given the option to use three turrets as Blue Belles are a liability more often than not. I was disappointed that eliminating them removed the seats, but that was the trade off.
@Kallas Hallytyr had a good point. Might be worth considering.
Many of the reasons you mention are much less of a concern if you are in a squad. As in - friends with mics. A Corp or whatever. A leader and common purpose makes it simpler. Pickup your squad, drop them off - collect points as you book out of harm's way. Then come back to attack the next point. Racking up the points is a side issue for many pilots. Flying is the real reason to use dropships of any type.
Pre-HAV gank Uprising 1.7-8(?) both the pilot and the gunner's skills applied to the turret. My alt is a heavy and he was a gunner most of the time. He only skilled into small turrets in the vehicle tree. Now he has nothing in the tree at all as, last I knew, the skills no longer stack.
My favorite tank is a Lightning. Just sayin.

STD dropships are fine. They're far more tanky than ADSs. They have enough firepower to act as gunships if wanted. They're fast enough to make escapes and do most the maneuvers ADSs can do (though not as quick).
The biggest problem with DSs is that no one utilizes them to their fullest capability. That's a problem with the community, not the DSs themselves. You can easily pull about as many WPs in the sky as you can on the ground (maybe not top 3, but up there), so long as your team makes use of you.

Dropship: 2. I agree the maneuverability should be buffed a bit, I hate how long it takes to tilt your ship.
4. I completely agree with.
6. I think would be pretty cool.
Assault Dropship: 1. Not necessary, then it'd be called an "Assault Ship"
