(Been playing since closed beta)
When Dust was first announced it was described as a hardcore game, complex with actual risk versus reward.
There was to be no free re-spawning. Death was meant to cost you, so that you would have to think about what you wanted to risk.
Dust was meant to be the thinking persons shooter.
But in it's ongoing attempts to find more ways to monetize Dust, CCP has seriously compromised this vision to the point where it no longer applies. You can now buy completely fit out suits that never run out. Sure they are not prototype suits, but they allow you to earn ISK with no risk of losing it.
We have Jara Kumora, who provides a 15% bonus when you sell your items and cannot be gained through any means other than opening your wallet, which in a game where ISK matters is an outright advantage to people who pay.
Could you imaging what would happen if something similar was introduced in EVE?
And then there is the Warbarge.
The length of time it takes to upgrade it is so long that competitive players virtually have no option other than purchasing Warbarge components with real money (and with the Warbarge becoming a key piece in planetary conquest it's reasonable to expect that the pressure to do so will only increase).
It also allows me to earn items and ISK without any effort. risk, and frankly - with it's linear upgrade path - without any intelligence. Just the ability to select collect and upgrade.
My ongoing concern is that if Legion follows a similar monetizing scheme, then it's vision will similarly be compromised and it will be turned into just-another-shooter.
TL;DR
CCPs monetization of Dust has undermined the games original vision as a hard core sandbox game with real risk versus reward.

Plex doesnt give an ingame bonus.
It does allow players to buy ISK with real money, but the catch is that another player must earn the ISK and then pay for it. It doesn't create ISK from nowhere. |

Though I am not an EVE-Online player, I admire what little I know about the game, and so let me say this is a nice thread topic to think about, Ghural.
Since EVE-Online is a PC-based title, I am not sure if there is a "Benifactor" or "Enabler" company who CCP has to deliver side-profit to, quite the way that Eve-DUST 514 (a PS3 game) has SONY as an Enabler who CCP delivers side-profit to.
I tend to think it's the side-profit mechanic to Sony, that drives the AUR machinery that we see in making Jane the broker purchasable Jara, the purchasable Barge Components and Keys, and the decisions to have BPOs (then later to eliminate BPOs, then recently to bring BPOs back to the game)
I'm not sure Project Legion is still something that we'll be seeing in any kind of developmentGǪ But because it is a PC-based ambition, free of the Sony-like Enabler company, the monetization you're pointing out SHOULDN'T be so necessary.
And I guess "necessary" is something we'd have to have deeper knowledge into the videogame retail market to effectively argue.
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Im not sure how Legion could honestly ever compete with the games coming out soon.
But I agree, the game we have now is NOTHING compared to the game we were sold way back when.

Ive suggested before that there be a basic adv and proto mode where risk reward matter obviously better pay for victory in harder modes to not only stop proto stomping and afking people. I think it would be the best addition. Anyway the warbarge concept is in my opinion phenomenal its a free sysytem sure you can pay for better advantage but you dont have to its free thats the best part its free people are upset that ohh it takes so long but it rquires no input besides claiming. I took a break from this game not long after legion was announced nbcame back right around the point where the ranking came in. I was surprised to see people upset that we werent given enough. ITS FREE O.o just like this game freee content n people upset with that its boggles my mind to be honest. I hope to see new additions and content and updates added not expecting to thought cuz guess what this game costs nothing. If u spend aur its to get ahead faster but its not like with time u cant catch up to others |

imo the lice and kittenshit are why peeps try the game and quit shortly thereafter. Rationalized starter fits and a complete lineup of militia gear are good woork that needed to be done, but they don't address what is driving players away from DUST.
All the player retention metrics CCP is harvesting from DUST are heavily skewed by new players' reaction to poopy mechanics in a harsh environment filled with protolice stomp squads.
When you add in Rat's new cheez factor, the explosive spam, the extortionism/hucksterism of the marketing 'model' and the way vets have been given permanent, systematic damage bonuses(passives + Krin's + barge), the first thing new peeps do after quitting DUST is most likely take a long hot shower with strong soap and steel wool.
