So I'm thinking about spacing into tanks now that I've hit 34 million and am pretty comfortable with my suites and weapons.
Any advice for skills needed and order to get. Is there a thread you know about you can direct me too?

Specifically which blend of tanks are you interested in?

Its an isk and SP sink but if you really are looking to do so figure out if you like armor vs shields and spec into skills that aide your choice. Pick a large turret and spec into that. You have 3 choices and no single turret will work for each situation. The more you go into optimization allows you to have an easier time choosing your fittings. |

Agreed. Imo, the missle tank is awesome, followed by the blaster, then the rail. In a tank, there is somuch you have to be aware of,while focusing on your target. While hunting another tank, fordge guns and av's are after you. Then the scouts are running up to place remotes on your tank. You may be more powerful but youare also the big target. Whichever you choose to use, be very aware ofwhat is going on around you. Oh yeah, one more thing, be careful about extragunners in the tank. Some blueberries don't know when to get out. I usually don't equipt the extra guns. Had this happen more than once. Could not recall my tank because blueberry would not exit my tank. Good luck onyounew adventure.

Kill all the turret installations first, they can be the death of you when you need a quick escape.
Shield extenders or armor plates are a must.
Get ready to die. A lot. Or you could be a coward and jump out at the last second. (I personally think they should add an enter/exit timer).

This is the most important tanking advice you can get. A captain, ALWAYS goes down with his ship. Tanking is not for abandoners.

Pick a style and stick with it, run the mlt tanks until you decide you prefer shield or armor. The turret isnt so important early on you can usually do fine with a basic large, but the fitting optimization is so crucial for higher end fits. I havent tried the new hulls but I plan on respeccing my Vehicle alt completely out of infantry again when I play next. The module skills are also pretty key, the extra time and cooldown will keep you in the fight longer.
Installations may be the single most dangerous thing if you're getting into a hot fight, don't ever rely on blues to keep them friendly, you will just get shot in the back.
Plan on saying "huh?" Quite often.
And never...never...open your map in any sort of solid structure.

I love lighting the clone up the second he hops out. He gets back in and dies with his tank like a proper tanker.

So the above is a tangled mess of non specifics but again I'll ask the OP specifically what kind of tanks are you looking at picking up. From there we can talk about skill allotments, builds, your personal style, etc.
Once you have that down we can then talk about tactics on the battlefield and how to make you better than your average tankman.

Can't agree more on killing installations first. I personally find CPU controlled ones more dangerous. As for jumping out of a tank before the big kaboom, reddies usually get greedy when I jump out, thinking they can kill me plus get my tank via hack, which gives my tank time to recoup few extra armor points to jump back into, and make off like a bandit. Also never hurts to bring emergency rep tool or an av fit in a tank.

Shields and Large Missiles --- this is the "low effort" mode I prefer Armor, however, so I don't go out that often.
Most AV have bonuses to Armor. Missiles can drop a large quantity of damage into a mid to far target. Blasters are meant for close range. Rails, obviously long range.
Anyway, the new fitting optimizations seem to be needed to return tanks to their before-patch levels of health, so whichever one you choose, is what you'll need to focus on.
Then you can focus on your main weapon. They don't do well if your armor/shields aren't up to par. After that... possibly the small turrets if you want people along for the ride.

At this moment in time, put all your points into armor, and armor related vehicle skills, and blasters.
Shields, rails, and missile sp is wasted at this point in time. |

At the moment, armor tanks are very viable. Shield tanks are weak after echo.
Madrugar can live through missile tanks, rail tanks, minmando swarms. Hardener + 305-450rep, it's just insane.

Any advice for skills needed and order to get. Is there a thread you know about you can direct me too? Be prepared to have to invest a *LOT* of skillpoints into it and be prepared for un-even engagements with people who see a basic vehicle and pull out proto av on it. Essentially it's like starting with a rookie char all over again, things aren't nice until you get about 10-15 sp into the role.
Finally found right thread.

TBH just don't do it.
I sunk 61mil SP into all vehicles and armor is the only viable one, half the modules you will not use or won't be able to fit, you get little investment for the SP required compared to infantry and it will cost you alot more in ISK and vehicles have alot more problems in general which atm won't be fixed anytime soon and some for even years and yes i am referring to the railgun bugs that still exist.

Ps. You don't need fk ton of SP to be competetive using tanks. You'll have good tank fits with less than 7-9m invested skill points [counting all turrets and both tanks ; shields/armor]

Once you have that down we can then talk about tactics on the battlefield and how to make you better than your average tankman. Want to focus on AV with some AI ability. I currently run minmatar suites and love speed which has me leaning towards shields. I also have the blood raiders LAV BPO so the shield based skills will help there too.
I want a solid cheap build to start with to get the hang of things. Currently have 2 million SP to start with and 40million ISK that gets routinly wasted or given away since I turn a good profit nowadays.

A load of bullcrap.
That tradition was started with the captain being the last to exit the ship, so he was not abandoning the crew that he was directly responsible for. Only crazed lunatics hunting sea monsters with an obsession "go down with the ship."
Most of the time my HAV doesn't even have a crew, and in the tradition of tanks, not ships, when the tank needs to be abandoned everybody gets the hell out as they are glorified rolling coffins with a turret on top.
Never give your enemy a free lunch
Later today when I get home, I'll go ahead and post my opinion of what the OP should do, if armor is in his interest, as well as my general tactics that saved me HAVs even when they were made of tinfoil and cost 2.3 million each.
