So, long time vet here. Actually a vehicle user, very little experience with suits and running the gun game. I have always struggled making kills on the ground, even with a proto logi and a proto weapon I struggled.
So got a respec, and went cal assualt. You know, maxed my core skills, maxed my assault skill, ect. But those are things I've done before. The one new thing I have done, that I've never done before, was max my weapon proficiency skill. You know the one that increases damage against either shield or armor, after you get the main weapon skill to 5.
It's like night and day. What a difference it makes. If you think about it, it's basically like 2 complex damage modifiers, against either shield or armor of course.
So choosing a weapon, and maxing out proficiency as soon as possible, will make a huge difference in your gun game. Not just at the proto level but at the basic level as well. I struggled to make kills with a basic assault and basic weapon, now I can actually MAKE some freakin kills.
If you are struggling, get that weapon to 5 and start dropping some points into the proficiency skill. The proficiency skill will make a huge difference, not just at a proto level, but at the basic level.

I think proficiency should only be taken on a case by case basis.
If you're using an SCR, you're really struggling with armour damage and having more shield damage doesn't really help much. It's still a very expensive skill, though. So whether it's worth actually levelling for a newbie is something worth considering.

I put 4point to the skill early on. Only several month later maxed out when I spared enough SP for lvl5. I think this is a more reasonable solution under 15mill SP. |

True, you don't need to max it out right away. A few points though will make a difference. Each level is equal to a basic light damage mod against armor or shields.

I was using the SCR with prof 4 before I respeced. Really hated it. Sure it was awesome melting shields, but breaking through armor was always a pain. And armor seems to be everywhere.
This is why this go around I went into the rail rifle. Lovin it far more.
