So I just really got into DUST when my neighbor introduced me to it. I played it for a while in his house and I thought it was pretty fun. I don't know but there is a lot of people with these black suits or whatever that are really hard to kill. I used to be able to kill people before but now I cant for some reason.
Another guy was using a Calente or something like that gun that was killing me instantly. I think my friend said they were from a group named Incorruptibles or something like that and that I should watch out for them. I came over to his house before downloading it and there was also 4 people on the other side with Glory tags on them. I wonder hwo to get those.
Is this the norm or am I just a bad player? I know I've been playing for only a few days but I can't seem to kill anyone.
Any advice? |

The gun you got killed by is called the Kalante, its an officer weapon found only through loot.
In a scale of power you have standard gear(STD) advance gear (ADV) and prototype (PRO). There is also Officer suits but those are rarely used.
The tags or Corporations as they're known in this game are a great way for a new player to really understand the core aspects of this game as you'll always have a helpful member to answer your endless amounts of questions.
Make sure to join many channels with many people to greatly familiarize yourself with the crowd that way you'll never really have a need for a corporation once you become capable with any weapon and all forms of " acceptable tactics"
Edit: you're gonna die...alot

I don't know if troll or..
If no, then hello, welcome to oblivion. You are one of the countless newbies to meet the horror of Protostomp. The big bad baddies that wear Prototype gear, use Prototype weapons, and like kicking newbies into the curb. The only advice, is to work to get that same gear, or go Advanced Gear. Strafe alot. ALOT. Try your darndest to aim for the head no matter what. Learn when to hipfire and when to scope unless you go sniper. If you are a sniper, stay away from the redlines. That is another advice stay away from the redlines, redlines equal baaaad.
Oh, and learn to love tacos, because this is a taco community. If you don't like tacos, it's gonna be hard for you. Because tacos are the bread and butter of this game and community. I tried years ago to get people to like chimichangas but dam GJR crushed my dreams of that happening. Every Matari likes bacon. You are Gallente, so that is a big plus, because we are the most liked race here, unless it comes to Caldari, they hate us. Learn the lore, because it is useless in the game but is big time in the forums. Ever played EVE? No? Ok good because that means nothing too.
I think i covered all the basics, but i feel this advice is incomplete. Oh, if you come to the forums, learn quickly, that everyone here is a troll. This community is a very dark place buddy, not as bad as the dreaded 4chan, but this place is dark. We are all a bunch of bitter vets, and peeps.
Oh wait, now i remember. IF YOU GET HATE MAIL, CONGRATZ, YOU ARE DOING SOMETHING RIGHT. Hate mail, is the blood of DUST. We strive for it. We wants it. We needs that precious. Make them mad enough to hate on you, get so good or so many kills that they cry hax! Strive for it little newbie. Let it become your weapon and let it be sharp as the liberty that burns through your veins!
If you is troll, I applaud you...you dirty punk..

Man, the only thing I can tell you is to get ready... to die... alot. But it is worth it. Take these deaths as a lesson.
I've been through this. I remember my first match: 13 kills, 7 assists, 5 deaths. After that nothing. I kept playing and today, about 2 moths after my first match, gess what: 15 kills, 1 assist, 7 deaths.
Keep playing and I seggest to invest most of your SP (skill points) in your defence, this really helps.
Always report to tomorrow what you can do today, because you might not have to do it anymore tomorrow.

If you are referring to these-
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/thumb/9/91/Army-USA-OR-02.svg/120px-Army-USA-OR-02.svg.png
they are called chevrons, and they indicate that player is in a squad. Squad members can chat on mics, and squad leaders can issue squad orders.

The first few matches you play are against other new players. After a short time, you are thrown in with the regular population.
Study the skill tree. Apply your skill points to attributes that passively improve your survivability, such as Armor, Shields, and the corresponding modules. Play with the combat rifle for a while, its a good starter gun. |

DUST 514 is as hard as dark souls 1 and 2. It can sometimes be harder than dark souls.
Prepare to die. Avoid the black suits and very flashy suits.(the flashy suit are easier but they are usually skilled players)
Skill into level 5 complex profile dampeners and std assault rifles.
Skill into a heavy suit that you like such as the amarr heavy. You will be slow, but your supposed to use them if you can spawn at objectives. They are for point defense and city environments.
Buy 10 units of all infantry militia gear in the market from your neo com when you get the ISK. (ISK is credits/money)
If you get scanned, RUN!!! for your allied MCC or the closest friendly objective. You may find players that may protect you slightly. If you find no friendly players or you don't retreat, you may get ambushed by 6-16 players. They might be in black suits.
Don't stand still when you fire your gun. (ironically there are players that do stand still alot in close range fights and they never win.)
Take a look at general discussions and look for gun game 101 thread at the top.

Defense/Weapon. Invest 50/50 in your defense and you weapons. This will give you good protection, as well as good attack. I did this and it works well.
If you ever buy armor plates, use ferroscal or reactive plates. Armor plates will give you movement penalty. Ferroscal plates don't have any penalty. Reactive plates have movement penalty, but increase armor recharge speed. Choose wisely.
For Light weapon, this really depends on you. I personaly prefer assault rifles, and I mostly use the GB-9 Breach and the GEK-38.
Sidearm also depends on you, although, I sugest SMG. (Submachine gun). This can be useful against Scout-Shotgun combo. (I hate those)
For the rest, do as you want. These are suggestions. If you're not sure what to invest in, buy Militia Gear, try them and see what suits you the best. Don't worry, these are not expensive and don't require any skills, although they aren't good quality.
Always report to tomorrow what you can do today, because you might not have to do it anymore tomorrow.

Salutations, Russell! And welcome to one of the most deceivingly normal, yet excruciatingly difficult First-Person-Shooting games ever on PS3. (NoGǪ I'm not joking. The game is 'rough', especially on beginners).
Beginner players have sooo much to learn, and (like it or not) Dust is deliberately set up so that you have to dedicate a LOT of time to figure out, study, experiment, and build yourself into a comfort zone. It IS a fun challenge (many players have been at this game for 3 years now, and like it), but you may not have expected to spend THAT long working your way through a kooky video game.
The "Glory" tag you spotted in the game may be the "Corporation" that player was a member ofGǪ yep, the game has a deep storyline that allows players to form and join corporations (like fighting clans).
The "black suit" your attacker was wearing may be one of the many rare "Dropsuits" that allows a player to have certain subtle advantages over his opponent when in a close-range gunfight. Many players love to use suits and gear that you might consider "unfair" compared to what you might be fighting with now. Like I said, Dust is a "rough" game to adjust to.
You CAN learn about these things in your game tutorial menu (I know, that's boring to read a tutorial in a video game), or check out the "Rookie Training" section of this Forum. You CAN eventually obtain and try to use some of the gear you see other players keep killing you with, but it takes TIME (a lot of time) to be able to access them, and when you do, you often find they are not as super-powerful as you originally thought. In Dust, people get killed for reasons that are different from what they were assuming.
If you and your friend are in it just to have casual fun and NOT get too involved in the game's long process to achieve points and enrich your assets and technical skills, then it's best NOT to let yourself get caught up in the who's and why's of your opponents. The explanation may aggravate or frustrate you more than you want from a game you just want to have leisure fun in.
Good Luck, good hunting,GǪ and hey, tell me if your real name is Russell Johnson (or if it is a tribute to the late actor).
Universe of good wishes for the 49, especially CCP Eterne...

Assault,Logistics, Commando,Scout,Sentinel
From greatest to least in terms of amount of sp to completely utilize.
Scout, logistics, Commando, Assault, Sentinel
So since your a new player I would advise you to skill into medium frame gallente suits so you can use both the assault suit and if needed the logistics to gain sp much quicker

Thanks a lot for the help, except for maybe the last commenter (is that how you greet all of your new players?).
Anyway, I definitely learned a lot and it seems like a really indepth game. I will meet up with my neighbor so he can teach me in more detail, however the advice was very much needed and you have my thanks.
I may play tomorrow since my work is very taxing, we'll see.
I think I may go into the Sentinel suit since it doesn't really require that many skill points to go into. May try out some stuff with Militia equipment and see how that goes. |

It may take more time, but It would be beneficial to work on your dropsuit upgrades, your Armor and Shields, since that affects any suit you get. Use your boosters to help you get more SP faster, it'll help alot. And like I and others said, the Rooking Training Grounds part of the forum will be a huge help for you.
And definitely use militia gear at first until you atleast are able to get advanced gear. Militia gear is still good, even though you are easier to die. Hell, I run militia gear, and I kill atleast a weakened proto before i die to the mass of bullets coming from every direction. I sometimes get those headshots with my MLT AR..

^this.
this game requires some research. study the market and available gear (suit and weaponry) and what skills are required to just use them. study your character skills map to know what prerequisites are needed to even just open the skills to USE your gear of choice.
The market has a ton of cheap entry level (militia gear) stuff. buy it cheap and test it all. don't even bother skilling into specific suits or weapons until you've had a chance to play with the militia variants. skill points are the currency to improve your gear, and takes time to accumulate. dumping all you've earned to date into Swarm Launchers only to find out after that you can't shoot soldiers with them, or that woah.. you really like the Mass Driver now, gosh I wish I some skill points left to get one! idunno. it sucks ;) just saying to look around and find your niche maybe then go from there. you should have a better grasp of what's going on by then, and with the experience to make better educated judgments for your skill progression.
all the best, and good luck.
