Ok, I'll need some brave souls to test this and see if it's not just me.
So it was the first day of spring on Sunday and and after a terrible performance in my first game of the day, I thought I'd remove some digital clutter instead. A digital spring clean if you will.
Going through my Dust mail boxes I deleted a lot of email and forwarded to my Eve account (Dennie Fleetfoot) any that I wanted to save. I've got an 'Archive' folder set up on Dennie's account for such matters. I was totally ruthless so by the end of a couple of hours my Inbox, Sent, Notifications, Corp and Alliance mail boxes were clean and empty.
OCD now satisfied I had another game...
Now I want to want it clear that this is purely anecdotal, I have an SSD in the PS3, thermal paste upgrade, a 150mb internet connected via Ethernet and a ventilated custom built AV cabinet. There are any number of factors that could account for this but in that second game and subsequent ones I had a significant increase in FPS. Using my APEX Galmando Centurian, of which all the skills effecting it I've got maxed out, the reload of the PLC and Burst AR is a blur compared to previously. The firing of the AR was much smoother and more responsive. In general the whole game was more fluid. There was only one point I detected any frame slowdown and that was at the EOM when the MCC blew up.
The only difference in the game was the lack of email downloaded to the client. I also only have 4 channels open.
I'm also likely to be the Merc with the most emails on my client with CPM and D-UNI business, so I might be the one player the benefit the most from such a email purge.
If you want to try and repeat this but have emails you want keeping forward them to an alt account or do what cameraphones were invented for.
If you do try this, please post your findings here. For reference my PS3 is a slim model.

I ended up doing this when the suggestion popped up on the forums a few weeks ago. Deleted essentially all my mail, chats, sold a tremendous amount unnecessary gear, and significantly downsized my fittings collection. This was after defragmenting very recently, and that also had a noticeable effect on load times for chats and restocking, in the interest of full disclosure. But cleaning up in game did seem to help. I notice it most on maps that usually have atrocious lag (read Gallente Lag Facility) that seem to run much smoother now. For anyone who's not too sentimental I would recommend trying this.

I've heard it's effective; will go try it out.
Will play a game or two in advance, for comparison purposes.
Guys, we need to stop calling MU a 'matchmaker' when it's actually a 'teambuilder'.
And I want to play FE:A now. Damn.

I have a stock slim. I've found the more digital clutter (especially chat channels with over 50 people, hidden or not) makes the client try to kill itself.
It's why I usually run with dev hangout closed and I frequentky purge my mails. Even so I get massive framerate drops whenever I get more than one player identifiably from another continent in play.
Usually though, I have less lag issues than most people report. Lag in games where at least half the players are new are less laggy. All-vet games become lethally choppy quick
If you ever see me ditch a map it's because I am teleporting back and forth randomly while trying to move in a straight line.
I am going to see what happens when I delete all but 5 fits from my fitting window soonish. Since it's possible (very likely) that this has a violently detrimental effect.

I've heard it suggested that the association between player life and lag is due to the way the game calculates suits; that veteran players have more suits with more slots causes more lag.
If removing your own fittings helps, do tell - although I can't say I'm particularly hopeful.

I personally suspect that its a memory issue that the 512 ram of the PS3 is struggling with. So anything that you're not needing I'd chuck.
I'm also trying a fresh install when I get home from work. See if the mails on my alt are having an effect too. Mails are only downloaded when sign in with a merc.

I tried it some days ago, I had like 900+ unread mails so I probably had 3k+ total mails. Nothing changed, I still lag like a retrd!
But, Hey, my connection is only 5 mb so...

Tried everything. Fresh re-installation, channel/mail/contacts deletion, downgrading to 480p, screen scale 0, switching from wireless to cable. Everything (save for suit fitting deletion but honestly I need every one of them).
Lags in merc quarters unceasingly. In match, I would get sporadic moments of frame freezing that result in my death more often than not.
It started since they changed the atmospheric moods, whichever update that was.
Please buff my Magsex. It doesn't hit hard enough...

My game runs silky smooth, and always has, I've never had an FPS issue unless there was an absolute ass-load of equip spam.
I'm not part of any channel besides the default ones which I can't leave, and my corp chat.
Voice is disabled (we use skype, anyways, or TeamSpeak).
My PSN contacts are limited.
My DUST 514 contacts are limited.
I purge my sent and received emails every week.
I do a clean install EVERY patch day.
I make sure at least 15% of the PS3 HD is free, minimum (this is good for any computer).
I use literally the second gen PS3, the fat big black box that's ancient.
Decluttering helps a million, and I only feel laughter towards the poor SoBs who complain about bad performance.
