Gun Game. The Art of 1v1. Dust514GÇÖs playerbase is SORELY lacking this. If I had 200k for every time I saw someone stand completely still while firing a weapon that ISNGÇÖT a sniper rifle, I would have enough ISK to buy Nyain San. Gun Game is vital to shooting games. Learning it is not the easiest thing, but it will vastly improve your overall experience and gameplay.
FPS games generally boil down to slaying. Slaying is just considered killing a lot of people. In an FPS, killing and not dying are linked. You want to hit the target as much as possible, while being hit yourself as LITTLE as possible.
There are various techniques for doing so. I like to separate them into a few categories; Firing, Strafing, Awareness
Firing Stances Killing people is the point of an FPS, so we'll tackle this first. In an FPS, you have a few "Stances" to fire from, that have various effects on your accuracy.
Standing Hipfire is the standard form of firing. You maintain maximum mobility in this stance. Get used to this stance. This is the primary stance for strafe game that we will see later.
Standing ADS is the second standard form of firing. You lose a lot of mobility, which is a DEATH SENTENCE in CQC. ADS is "Aim Down Sights" and vastly decreases the deviation of your bullets from "True Center". In laymans terms, the bullets become less of a "Spray" and more of a "Beam". This allows you to have pinpoint aim and apply maximum DPS.
Knowing when to Hipfire and ADS is extremely important. You don't try to ADS a target facing you at 5m away, and you don't try to hipfire a target at 60m away. The weapon you are using also have a huge effect on when you ADS or not.
For example: The Combat Rifle
The Combat rifle is a fantastic all around rifle, in terms of firing and range (Damage is a whole different story). It is easily able to hipfire at ranges up to 30 or 40m, depending on your skill as a shooter. When ADS'd, it can easily hit targets out to 50 or 70m, although the damage at that range will be vastly different. Now, that doesn't mean that you only ever hipfire at those ranges, and ADS at those ranges. Knowing when to ADS and Hipfire comes from EXPERIENCE. Find a weapon you enjoy and learn to use it.
Crouching Hipfire and Crouching ADS are almost NEVER used in dust. Unless you snipe. In which case, gun game goes out the door, and the rules of sniping kicks in, but IGÇÖm not covering that here.
In dust, you will probably only ever have to worry about the standing ads and hipfire.
Burst Firing
Hop onto Dust. Pull out an AR. Aim at whatever.
Now, Hold down the fire trigger while hipfiring. Note what happens. The bullets come out fairly accurately for a while, and then they start getting less accurate, and the muzzle starts climbing up. The longer you hold down, the higher up the barrel goes and the more inaccurate it gets.
Now try this. Repeat the experiment, but release and then QUICKLY resume firing after 5-10 shots. After 5-10 shots, release and resume again, QUICKLY. Just release and tap again. Note what happens now. IGÇÖll give you a few seconds to stand in awe. THIS is burst firing. You have lost an incredibly small amount of raw DPS, but have increased your sustained DPS by an incredible amount. The recoil and muzzle climb are almost COMPLETELY GONE.
Now, this isnGÇÖt the same for every rifle. Rail Rifles are similar, but they have to fire in sustained bursts with charge up time in between. Scramblers fire as fast you can pull the trigger, but you have to consider recoil and overheat. Good ScR practice is knowing how many shots you can spam before overheating in CQC, and how many shots you can put out without the recoil getting crazy at range.
Combat rifles are actually the hardest to squeeze maximum DPS out of, but considered to be the most rewarding. The Bursts have a timing interval. Listen to this and practice tapping your finger on a PS3 controller, or do it in game on a wall. This is will get you some really nice CR bursts going. Now, please note that the CR has MASSIVE issues burst firing in lag. This is why the Six Kin is so popular.
Sensitivity This is a personal setting that adjusts how GÇ£TwitchyGÇ¥ your aim is. Set the sucker to 100 across the board. GET USED TO IT. The reason for this is simple, it makes you more reactive. When you get pissed about people being able to turn around on a dime, itGÇÖs because sensitivity is maxed. It requires better aim however, as minor adjustments can have large effects. But the increased ability to snap back and forth between targets, and the ability to quickly track running targets in ADS is godsend. So, getting used to a higher sensitivity is done in two ways. 1.)Slowly increase the current setting by 5 every day or so. 2.)Max it and play till youGÇÖre used to it. I prefer the latter. YouGÇÖll learn to love how snappy the controls are.

I wasn't done yet guys...
Strafing The GÇ£Not dyingGÇ¥ part of killing. Strafing is done in an effort to throw off enemy aim, promoting longevity. HereGÇÖs an old video from Beta days, featuring ReGnUm and GoD-NoVa. These guys were downright terrifying back in their day, and they still are today. Gun Game carries over from game to game very easily.
Look at 0:41-1:03. If you pay attention, you will see some of the firing techniques mentioned earlier. 0:48 shows how burst firing lets him stay on target and keep putting bullets downrange.
Watch the whole video. He does a much better job of explaining strafing than I can on paper.
You ever meet those people who you just canGÇÖt seem to shoot? They seem to phase through your bullets and drop you in half a second?
THESE are the people who are combining the above two parts. They are strafing and firing perfectly. This will drastically improve your 1v1 game.
Awareness
Now, everyone knows that 1v1 game only goes so far. On large maps, such as the ones in Skirmish or Domination, you will often find that you will be threatened by more than one target at once.
You have a gun, and can really only shoot at one person at a time. Since you can only shoot one person at a time, you want EVERY engagement to be a 1v1.
And guess what? You can do that pretty easily. You have to control fire angles and cover to do so.
Cover
Cover is a wonderful, magical thing. Unlike everything else in this game, it has no hit points. It canGÇÖt be killed. Using cover is a way to reduce the overall damage being done to you. For example, using a pillar. You can stand behind a pillar, strafing in and out of cover and deal consistent damage while having shots hit the cover youGÇÖre strafing behind. You will take drastically less damage. If you know where the target is from behind cover, you can even start engagements with a GÇ£Pre-FireGÇ¥.
Pre-firing is a STRONG tactical ability to use in gunfights. Prefiring is done by lining up your gun to where the target will be when you leave cover. As you strafe out of cover, you start firing BEFORE you leave cover. The advantage is the fact that you are starting the engagement already dealing damage, giving you a head start in the fight. In Dust, you can do this to people BEHIND cover as well. If you have scans up, you can watch people through walls. As they turn the corner, you can immediately open fire, oftentimes getting a kill before they can react.
To see this in action, watch This video. ItGÇÖs from BF3, but the form is the same. Prefiring is a powerful technique when used right.
Map Awareness
Map Awareness is a powerful tool in your Dust514 arsenal. ItGÇÖs a combination of knowing the layout of the map, and knowing the general GÇ£FlowGÇ¥ of battle. HERE ARE THE MAPS. LEARN THEM WELL. Now, IGÇÖm sure some of you have played enough to learn the GÇ£General FlowGÇ¥ of maps and sockets. For example, everyone knows that Domination on Gallente Research facility features heavy CQC fighting in and around the Supply depot and objective. Or how in skirmish, people like to use the top of the GÇ£MushroomGÇ¥ in the Communications facility to be able to overlook most of the socket.
Knowing where most people travel in maps in crucial. It tells you locations where you can expect enemy fire. Not only that, but by knowing popular areas, you can start to guess where you are being hit from, if you get fired upon while walking around.
This is where cover and map awareness overlap. If you know where they are, you know which pieces of cover are best suited to survive. If you know where they are, you can also move around until you have a place where you can easily fire from, and where its hard to hit you.
Smart use of Map Awareness and cover are what drives Skirmish as a game mode. You have to be able to quickly move between objectives and engage targets safely. Once you learn how to use cover, you will realize that cover has literally been put ALL OVER THE PLACE in city sockets. Those random pillars and boxes are THERE FOR A REASON. USE THEM.

COMBINING THEM ALL
Here is the situation. These pictures will show you how to engage the targets in a combination of cover and map awareness. Strafing and Firing are done in the segments where you are taking down targets. First priority should be the man closest to you. The man on overwatch is dangerous, but the one on the ground is doubly so. Find an angle to engage where the other two have a hard time hitting you. After killing him, you want to keep that guy on overwatch where heGÇÖs at, or even keep his head down. Fire a burst from here to do so. Once he has his head down, switch sides so he canGÇÖt hit you where heGÇÖs at (For when he pokes his head back up). This location lets you easily fire on the third guy. Once they are removed, you have several locations where you can easily engage the man on overwatch. Pick one and go for it.
After playing for a bit, you can easily start to notice places where you can set up and watch angles. HereGÇÖs a quick sketch of good spots on the communications facility. One of my favorite spots is fantastic in Domination. Sit on L-11 stairwell and use the height difference as cover. Anyone who wants to walk to the objective has to walk down that path, with no cover. Plop down a nanohive and open fire, you can stop whole groups from travelling down that path with 1 or two people.
Overall, that covers almost all the basics for gungame in Dust. There are more advanced techniques, such as headglitching and reload cancelling, among other things, but these start to encroach upon abusing game mechanics, rather than just good old fashioned gun game.
That being said, those skills are still some worth learning. Everyone decent in FPSGÇÖs know how to reload cancel, and headglitching is just smart use of cover to give yourself an advantage (You can fire easily on targets with only a small bit of your hitbox being visible).
But that is for another time. I will field any questions, and feel free to shoot me a message if you want to squad up. If IGÇÖm not running with a full squad of FA, IGÇÖll try and help you out.

YouGÇÖll learn to love how snappy the controls are. This is the most cowardly and nooby playstyle of any fps. I refuse to ever alter my sensitivity because if I take three guys on from different directions and win, it's much more of an accomplishment than having high sensitivity. High sensitivity is for tryhards who get ridiculously enraged if they die even once. I do believe sensitivity options were added to fps games to compensate for bigger/smaller tv screens, not so that people can insta-turn. Ever tried insta-turning your entire body? Doesn't work.
Yes, please ignore all of the tips presented and focus on the one thing that you don't like.
I showed how controlling angles and using map awareness can help you take on three guys in different directions and win.
It's an in game feature that is free to adjust. If anyone wants to, they can set it to max, or set it to zero. If there are advantages to running it at max, why shouldn't you?
Because it makes you angry that people can jump and turn around really quick, if you botch your sneak attack?
100 Sensitivity won't save you as a sentinel if you're being shotgunned. It will save you if being shot in the back while moving from point to point.
And yes, IRL, you can't just turn around that fast and start shooting. But this is a video game.

Remember, this guide is for total blueberries.
Most of them would oversample it. Hence why I made it easy for them with a nice metronome to practice with.
Every other main rifle is just "Hold down R1" or "Fire as fast as humanly possible".
I also debated on putting this in Training Ground, but I don't think many would find it there.
This is for new players, remember? I'm certain there's some people in this very thread who haven't figured out that there is other places than GD

It was actually a good match. I think we barely won to be honest. In that situation with blueberries not doing much why shouldn't a squad bring out good gear to turn the match around? Granted we had no idea how the match would play out when we initially ran in, but still. It happens all the time, a good squad is doing all the work, basically 6 v 16 and it comes down to the wire. I just don't see what's wrong with that. In the match you got so butthurt about it was nothing close to resembling a stomp.
No, you're thinking of a separate game, where he did have a squad and we had two squads running proto vs. Each other. That match was fun. My Shotgun scout went 31-3.
The match he's talking about was different, it was a stomp. But the sad fact was that it wouldn't have mattered what we ran against that team. A team full of nobodies and randoms can't stand up to the squads we had in that domination. They lost the game in the first 5 minutes, we just had to take another 10 to clone them.

but man oh man do i hate the term 'gun game.' My Missile Incubus hates "gun game" too ;)
If you read in the guide, flanking, cover, position and tactics are included in my version of "Gun Game".
To me, its a combination of knowing how to fire your gun, avoiding being hit, and using map knowledge to its fullest advantage.
If you hate hipfire, go play battlefield. It's all about what you just talked about. I had to learn how to strafe coming here.

Awesome Pantaloons wrote:I'll definitely have to check the sensitivity advice. I'm almost scared to see what happens. I typically can get between 20-30 kills in a match regardless of gear and I play at a whopping 30-35 sensitivity. I follow pretty much every other bit of this post by default. It's basically all common sense. Lol Bloody brilliant post though. Useful for the less-learned.
Just remember that 100% sensitivity is useful if you have the aim for it. I say put it to 100 and just get used to it, as you will get more and more accurate with it over time.
The only problem with 100% sensitivity is in CQC and Long range, where quick swipes can completely blow you off target.
However, if you have great twitch reflexes, you can easily use it at all ranges.

I don't have "innate skills"......
Mostly just FPS experience.
Anyone whose played FPS's for a while would have picked up on some, if not all of what is listed here.

Never saw that coming. I approve of Frame's habit of stickying useful newbie threads. This one is even in GD, where it might actually get seen!
That was actually my intention for putting it in GD

every "gun game" player does this. I am not as spastic, so i prefer out flanking, using cover, utilizing position and tactics. Sadly aiming down sights should be the most accurate, in dust 514 its not. If i had my way, all hipfire would be near unmanagable. Sure you could circle strafe, but you wouldn't be able to hit the broadside of the MCC.
I'm gonna throw you a couple likes, because, i do like what motivated you to write a guide, its not a from a bad place and i applaud you for it.
but man oh man do i hate the term 'gun game.' My Missile Incubus hates "gun game" too ;)
If you read in the guide, flanking, cover, position and tactics are included in my version of "Gun Game". To me, its a combination of knowing how to fire your gun, avoiding being hit, and using map knowledge to its fullest advantage. If you hate hipfire, go play battlefield. It's all about what you just talked about. I had to learn how to strafe coming here. Well if you want this thread to degenerate, two can play at that game If you love hipfire so much go play destiny Or go play Call of Duty! Oh snap! No he diddn'tHipfire is about letting aim assist shoot for you. Leting the Aim Assist do the work for you is a part of this game, but certainly not a part of skill. But please tell me more about your advanced tactics. Headglitching, reload glitching and the like. There's a weird elitest distinction in any competitive game that leans toward "hard mode" play, or using the weakest tactics and trying to win with them. I can see the appeal, but most of us are going to use what works. Shoto in sf, Sentinel in mvc2, etc etc. That's why in most high level competitive play it's not called "glitching" it's called using the system. I have noticed you have to abandon logical physics in dust and play around the wonks. Shooting people through goofy shxt, taking advantage of that guy who didnt know you have to jump up that last step..because why should you?, and things of the like are all par for the course, or for better phrasing Anything goes. It would be nice to always fight with the Marquis of Queensbury rules, but chances are if somebody can use a technical hiccup to their advantage, they will. Lots o Stuff
This isn't a "Fix" for hit detection, its simply a way to improve newberries aim and abilities on the field.
These carry over to ALL FPS GAMES.
This guide can do nothing but help.
But yes CCP, hit detection and collision detection still need a LOT of work. I shouldn't be flipping LAV's over invisible bumps

You're welcome
I actually had more than a few vets exclaim that they had never seen this video before.
It's a great video on strafing, says a lot more than I can in words.

I came here from BF3 with 100 sensitivity.
I feel like the game is sluggish even at 100, and unplayable at 0.
Like trying to turn in molasses.
