You know games have been bad when a reviewer from kotaku says this remade game from over 15 years ago feels fresh and new.
Anyone else enjoying this for the first time or taking a trip through memory lane?
In my own words however.
While the game is a grand space opera of tragedy and fate destined among the stars it takes a break from even most conventional of RTS. There is no base building there is no path to quickest cheese strategy and for a space RTS it heavily emphasizes the idea that you are indeed in space and that warfare is indeed 360.
The only game that may have even come remotely close in the absence of homeworld would be Nexus Jupiter Incident; if you are a fan of that game then Homeworld is right up your ally.
The pacing is methodically slow; it gives you time to chill out and plan and appreciate the artwork put back into the game. The music is a memorable as ever. The reason why base building is out of the door is because early on you will come to realize you are all what is left. Your fleet against the odds; what survives last mission follows you into this mission. Mistakes that you made early in the campaign can bite you really hard end game. Every ship that survives the audacious journey with you is there to the bitter end.
Graphics are up to par to modern standards and where 15 years ago nearly unmatched.
In the remaster there are some blemishes so far; fans of the old series would remember formations in HW1 more fondly as the remaster version executes it poorly.
Various graphical details are also misplaced rarely; mostly a decal or so.
A few bugs have ruined a few nice perspectives on cut scenes as it does not appropriate lock your controls at time to prevent such.
Overall for a game that has been neigh unplayable in the age of multiple cores, its aged fairly well and just to be playable again is a joy to those that remember playing it back then.
Is it worth its price? Completely. Replay ability? Is a bit weak as there are no difficulty settings in this game. (Game is already hard enough as is) Enjoyment in new replays could include ship ban lists where you prevent yourself from building a class of ships. Modding? Not out yet but the tools that help made it possible to rebuild this game will be put out. Multiplayer? I have yet to tried it yet as I am getting more familiar with the throes of the game again, the new multiplayer game is a new monster overall from the previous one as this is including all races from both games into one game which hasn't been done before. Its in beta and completely not yet balanced.
Controls; Bit off from what I remember and so used to other modern rts conventions then again I may be just rusty (accidentally order my mothership to self destruct) None the less for a space rts is nearly on the dot.
AI Allied ; This game doesnt manage (nor does it try to) micro scale. Fighters swoop in where they want in or out, Spare guns on ships shoot whoever they want if they cannot hit your designated target.
AI NPC ; overall mostly scripted and makes up for the lack of tactics with unfair advantages such as superior numbers and more percise hyperspace jobs that your own fleet cannot manage yet in HW1.
Graphics ; 4k UHD makes my eyes bleed in a good way.
Sound ; Makes space oddly inviting and warm but quickly cranks up the pace during combat making it a frantic workout as chaos of war clutters the radio comms; powerful ship to ship weapons ring out. With surround sound and sound based on camera position you can easily zoom in and be in the middle of all that audio action. Hear fighters fly by shells barely dodging you and ion cannons ripping apart capital ships.
Music ; Some Arabian mystic music you expect in a dune movie intertwined with traditional notions and pop future aesthetics makes the sound track pretty solid for the use of the game.
Voice Acting : While individual voices used so far are pretty strong the voices of units are pretty weak as there is not to many varieties. As in fighters are voiced by the same guy that mans the carriers. Then again this could have been likely a limitation back in the day on CDs and thus no star wars treatment was given retaining the everything the same as it was. The main characters voices are however very strong and well done; it takes a careful ear to listen out of the emotion going on and they're not as removed from humanity as you think they would be.
Story ; Any fan of the newer BSG series would be quick to draw parallel with this story. The story of the first is an epic journey to find where you belong. The second builds off of that by threatening to destroy everything. you have done in the first game.
Overall Score 4.5/5
5/5 Must own timeless piece of artwork. 4/5 Must purchase to encourage positive game development trends on how proper games should be made.
-.5 from 5/5 due to bugs, graphical errors, and maybe too strong of a hands off approach on the whole original. Also that gawd awful last commercial put out deducts 0.1 whole point.
I am a tough critic and I rarely give out anything above a 4 usually but homeworld the idea and passion behind it and the presentation can be felt in many of games in the following years and yet the game was so outstanding clones of it where never made likely out of the simple fear there is no way anyone can match up to it.
Homeworld remastered can be found on steam on the cheap; comes with Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2 originals tuned to run on modern machines. Homeworld 1 and Homeworld 2 Remastered which fully modernizes the experience and homeworld multiplayer beta.

Ripped it the other day to have a quick bit of nostalgia when i saw the steam ad, good sht and always was.
I enjoyed pop capping a fleet of fighters. They could destroy pretty much anything in one pass.

FYI. Difficult of the missions is scaled to the size of the fleet you jump with.
So if u jump with very little the difficulty drops if you jump with a monster fleet it ramps up.
A played ALOT back in the day so this has been well tested. At the garden can go screw itself =ƒÿå=ƒÿå

On the topic of space RTS
Any tried Sins of a Solar Empire?
Pretty fun. Brands itself as 4XRTS and does a really good job. Battles are awesome and very cinematic, while empire building and exploration are also very in depth.
Pace is slow enough you could zoom in to a battle and micromanage it, while doing basic meta from toolbars and hot keys.
Long games and tons of mods out. Think there's even an EVE mod.
Last I checked it was $40 on steam.
Who cares what some sniper has to say.
CCP, let's push for the license of Dust/Legion on both current Gen consoles!
