CCP rarely 100% locks out a dropsuit from doing something.
The sentinel dropsuits are good examples of this philosophy. Look at the sentinel dropsuit command skill; 5% reduction to CPU/PG with heavy weapons. This incentivizes the use of heavy weapons, but doesn't prevent someone from making a dual sidearm or light/sidearm sentinel. If sentinels want to fit something other than a heavy weapon they can, but they will have less CPU/PG available for tanking modules.

I think the optimization and operation skills should only apply when weapons are slotted in the correct slots.
You want a RR on your sentinel? Fine, but you don't get the CPU/PG discounts from skills.

If you die these days to a hippo wielding a light weapon, you would have been completely trashed by an assault wielding the same thing.

When you find these types of players they generally are found ontop of buildings where the range helps them, you could snipe them but then that takes you out of the frontline. 77m away that still eats shield and armor like its butter. The question is if heavies can use light weapons then i want to put a six kin burst on a gal scout gk.0. I cant because i am not allowed to because the heavy weapons dont show up when fitting. Should be the same for the heavies. Take the light weapons out of the assets available to use. Simple |

So by this logic we should also remove the ability to put sidearms in light weapon slots?

"Stronger" is kinda relative. A light weapon basically gains you range, but they really can't stand up to the HMG in terms of DPS or damage saturation.

One upside to this is that it would certainly make commando's more useful.
Who cares what some sniper has to say.

You can't rage at a heavy for using a light weapon. That heavy has some very real issues with movement. If you see this in an outside point you can eat his lunch. You are an assault or scout, just circle around behind him. He can't even chase you or jump over low rails!
Heavies are big, take a lot of dmg, and are slow. The only place this strategy works for that fitting is from an elevated firing range. He built that fitting for this situation. You are going to need a sniper rifle or a drop ship to get him down. If he is any where else, go get a scout and circle around behind him with a shotgun. 3 shots and bye, bye, even to proto.
Plus the heavy can't relocate, he is anchored to that point. Use tactics!
There does need to be a heavy weapon for mid ranges but that is supposed to be on the way and then we will see less AR wielding heavies.
If you hate them, go see a cal assault with and AR or RR. He has almost as much in shields and hits even harder. Or see a Min Assault with a CR and kin cats.
Heavy with a massive bullet hose called Lola (Burst HMG).

So you mean just sentinels?
The only reason I disagree is this goes against the versatility of the game and limits player choices
I also don't see this tactic used too often.
I do the scrubby heavies with light weapons thing sometimes. (And I mean militia heavy or the base loyalty sent)
I do this mainly to have a different suit with higher ehp and a slightly different playstyle
I also have no sp in heavy weapons or heavy suits and haven't had a whole lot of success with the base hmg (yes I know the adv/proto hmg is absolutely lethal)
I do okay when I use them but I do feel I'm at a disadvantage because of the lack of speed

A light weapon basically gains you range, but they really can't stand up to the HMG in terms of DPS or damage saturation.
Except at range, where the dps of the light weapon is greater, and the user of the light weapon is usually more mobile than the HMG user. If a rail rifle user wants to gimp his speed by spawning in a heavy suit instead of an assault suit, I can't think of a good reason to stop him. That the OP was irritated because a heavy wasn't playing the way he's "supposed" to play, is a pretty terrible reason.
Its far more important to gimp the heavy's ability to quickly mount and dismount a LAV, largely overcoming his designed mobility weakness, than to limit him to heavy weapons. But even that isn't terribly urgent, given AV that potentially makes the heavy more vulnerable when he hops in his LAV. Far more urgent than any of this, is buffing logis. <- Super-subtle-thread-hijack.

Sidearms are globally worse than light weapons, so its not a problem in terms of balance. |
