Just use all your components to get your Factory to the same level as your warbarge before even bothering to upgrade your warbarge further. The experimental laboratory takes 396 components a day at just level 1. You'll need your Factory to level 3 to break even.
Even with your Factory at Level 5, you'll still only be able to break even with the Lab at level 2. Thank god for Salvage and Box components eh?

So you're trying to tell me that the lab will take away components and if I don't make enough in one day, I won't be able to get any more upgrades ever? That's what I understood.
No no. If you want your two daily weapons from the lab at level 1, it'll cost you 396 components, but the Level 3 Factory only makes 400 a day. It's upto you whether you bother claiming the weapons or not.

With 14 module slots I'm beginning to suspect our warbarges will be what is transferred to Legion....
I'm dreading finding out how many components upgrading my Factory from Level 2 to 3 will be. 2756 to level 2....so what's 3?

Bonus to primary weapon damage, 1% per level, level 2 costs 300 WC and gives a 2% bonus.
No lol, as in I was wondering how many components it would take to upgrade a subsystem to level 3. 10,090 components btw.
My barge is Level 5 anyway.
