I have an SSD which helps but the few optimizations I did last night have my frames running higher and smoother than I have ever seen. I have also found battle field restocks to be far more smooth as well.
Sell all unused items except for proto and officer gear. I kept these just because I plan on them being gifts to fellow corp members and possibly as trades.
Delete all contacts. This does not seem to affect you unless you load it a couple of times and then if you have a large number of contacts it seems to drain on the PS3's ram.
Delete all mail. This includes sent, received, corp, and alliance mail.
Reduce channels. No more than 5 channels is the limit I set for myself.
Once all of this was done I deleted and reinstalled Dust. I had just deleted on the last update but decided I should do it again.
All of these things have been said before but I figured it would not hurt to compile it all into one list and let a few more people get to see it. I made sure to do these things before the delete because I did not want any of these things to creep into the game data on my fresh install. |

Those are all solid suggestions.
I'll add a few...
Reduce the number of PSN contacts and PSN mails. Set to LOW the setting in Options for graphics detail. If you're starting to get bad framerate and it continues from one map to the next, reboot your PS3 and do nothing outside of joining a squad, enabling voice in your chosen channel, and load the next battle. Don't mess with mail, fits, or anything else in-game. |

I had not thought about this. I vaguely remember something about PSN and Dust both using port 80 so this may help a lot more than one would think.

And a few more:
Use SD versus HD. Use a gaming monitor (i.e. low latency) instead of a TV. If using a TV, be sure it is in GAME MODE. Do NOT run your HDMI through any preamplifier or upscaling hardware -- run it directly from your PS3 to the TV/Monitor. Use your DS3 wirelessly as opposed to plugged in. Use an ethernet connection directly to your cable modem instead of a wireless router. |

My PS3 is loaded down with all kinds of emails, contacts, junk, games, movies, pictures, videos, profiles and themes lol
My Dust 514 is loaded down with endless amounts of contacts, items, channels and lots of other misc garbage
Maybe that's why I shoot shoot shoot and no one dies and I get killed in 0.02 seconds!? |

Those things certainly won't help.....
For me, the biggest change to my in-game performance came when I reduced display lag (removing a preamp, changing TV to game mode then eventually replacing the TV with a 2ms gaming display).
The other tips mentioned above certainly helped, but display/input lag was the real culprit for me. |

Do you think that this latency from the TV somehow puts more stress on the PS3?
I run though an AverTV capture card which I feel like is actually reducing the load on the PS3. I find myself in situations where other people are getting lag while I have a totally stable frame rate and have been very curious on the possible science behind this. I had always attributed this to my SSD but there were even situations where squad members had SSDs and were still getting lag while I was not.

Speeding up the PS3
Here's something I came across the other day. I noticed a bit of a difference after doing this. Now to delete my millions of contacts.

Solid state drive. Its the newer faster thing that everyone is using in their computers to seriously speed things up.
The hard drive in your system currently could be compared to a stack of CDs that have to be read to find the necessary information while an SSD is like a giant block of RAM that allows data to be accessed near instantly by comparison.

Uhhh.....what? Dude, I don't know computers or what a hard drive does or what RAM is or anything like that. I went to Google and typed in SSD...can I hook that to USB on my PS3? How would I use it? I want Dust to be faster

It goes inside the PS3 replacing your current hard drive.
Just go on youtube and search "install SSD in BLANK playstation 3" and replace blank with your playstation type. (slim, super slim, etc...)
There are also hundreds of threads here on the forums debating how much the SSD helps which you can search before you decide if you want to drop a hundred bucks on it.

No. It has nothing to do with PS3 performance, but everything to do with how quick you can react and, utimately, perform in FPS games like Dust.

I can't explain that at all....unless you're recording in and having your PS3 display in SD rather than HD.
That said, IMO slow framerate seems to be mostly independent of SSD -- although if you review the thread I linked above there are others that disagree with this. My suspicion for what you observed centers around the tips provided in this thread. I'll bet one of the guys in your squad had a lot of chat channels, had been messing with his contacts or fits, just hadn't rebooted recently, or one of the other things mentioned.
Hope this helps...Lead |
