There's been contradictory / unsatisfactory fluff and some of it is seemingly being re-written with warlords.
In essence, we are infomorphs (beings of information, rather than beings of flesh and blood) - we throw our consciousnesses rapidly between clones as they die or wear out. According to old fluff, our clones are mass produced generics (but now with warbarges that seemingly generate their own clones for each individual mercenary.... our clones might be customized for purposes of muscle memory and stuff).
Our clones have space-metal skeletons, nanite-enhanced self-repairing bodies, suits are grafted right into them and quite frequently they're teleported straight from the warbarge to the battlefield (THIS IS VERY BAD FOR THINGS THAT ACTUALLY INTEND TO SURVIVE MORE THAN A FEW DAYS AFTER THIS).
It is possible for us to have non-combat clones which would function like regular human bodies, it is also possible for both capsuleers and immortal clone soldiers to have 'backups' should the 'good copy' die without being able to transmit information (this was a real danger for capsuleers for a long time).

Thank you for the info there - so I guess it would be possible for a merc to have two clones running at the same time - one for just hanging around the warbarge drinking tea, the other for lobbing remotes into gaggles of heavies on the field of battle..
That is incorrect. We only operate one body at a single time (one consciousness, many bodies). There are very very bad things that can result from operating multiple clones simultaneously (information overlap if say two died at the same time, which could screw the data up and result in very, very permanent in irreparable psychosis).
The very idea of operating multiple clones simultaneously is taboo. It is one of the few risks to your 'immortality'.

Or maybe that's just what they tell you to stop you doing it? ps - good knowledge btw - I think I'm starting to get the picture
No, when they were first experimenting with the transference and storage of consciousnesses after the caldari developed/traded for the initial implants (if I remember correctly) they found out really quickly what could happen. They also found out you had to have a specific genetic marker or you could become 'mind-locked'
https://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/The_Jovian_Wetgrave covers some of the bad stuff that can happen.
